Metagratings for Efficient Wavefront Manipulation

Summary: In this paper, the authors review the physical mechanisms, functionalities, and recent progress of metagratings. Conventional gradient metasurfaces have limitations in rerouting impinging waves with overall efficiency, especially for extreme wavefront transformations. However, metagratings can manipulate light with unitary efficiency even in extreme conditions and offer advantages such as simpler fabrication and broader bandwidths.

Topology optimization design and experimental validation of an acoustic metasurface for reflected wavefront modulation

Summary: A level set-based topology optimization method was used to design an acoustic metasurface capable of tailoring reflection wave arbitrarily. The metasurface, composed of supercells with inhomogeneous units, achieved a desired reflection wave manipulation with relatively smooth and distinct boundaries. Numerical and experimental studies demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the optimization design method, showing promising applications for metasurface design in various metamaterials.
