Supramolecular assembly of protein building blocks: from folding to function

Nam Hyeong Kim et al.

Summary: Proteins play a crucial role in various phenomena throughout the life of living things. They form complex structures and regulate reactions, as well as exhibit different biological functions depending on the situation. The self-assembly of proteins is the fundamental principle behind the formation of hierarchical structures. These structures enable multivalent binding, ultra-sensitive regulation, and compartmentalization, and have been extensively utilized in biology. Recent advancements in the de novo design of protein assemblies have shown promising applications in understanding biological phenomena and therapeutics.

Synaptic Characteristics of an Ultrathin Hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) Diffusive Memristor

Ghulam Dastgeer et al.

Summary: A nano-sized two-terminal memristor demonstrating volatile threshold switching has been fabricated to emulate biological synaptic functions in neuromorphic computing. The device exhibits a large I-ON/OFF ratio and the experimental realization of synaptic behavior validates a psychological model of human brain learning. Input pulses with different spike-times are used to replicate synaptic functionalities.

p-GeSe/n-ReS2 Heterojunction Rectifier Exhibiting A Fast Photoresponse with Ultra-High Frequency-Switching Applications

Ghulam Dastgeer et al.

Summary: This study presents a van der Waals heterostructure composed of n-ReS2 and p-GeSe, exhibiting high gate tunable rectification with a large rectification ratio without any Schottky contribution. The sharp interface between p-GeSe and n-ReS2 contributes to the high rectification ratio.

Two-Dimensional-Material-Based Field-Effect Transistor Biosensor for Detecting COVID-19 Virus (SARS-CoV-2)

Parvin Fathi-Hafshejani et al.

Summary: This study utilizes FET based on semiconducting TMDC materials as a biosensor for rapid and sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2, with a detection limit down to 25 fg/μL. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental studies show that TMDC-based 2D-FETs have the potential to serve as sensitive and selective biosensors for rapid detection of infectious diseases.

Ultrasensitive WSe2 field-effect transistor-based biosensor for label-free detection of cancer in point-of-care applications

Mohammad Mosarof Hossain et al.

Summary: We have developed a highly sensitive tungsten diselenide field-effect transistor biosensor for label-free detection of early stage prostate cancer. By modifying the FET channel and ensuring specific binding between anti-PSA and PSA, we achieved a detection limit of 10 fg ml(-1) PSA. This ultra-sensitive and fast FET biosensor shows promise for point-of-care diagnostics applications.

AI for radiographic COVID-19 detection selects shortcuts over signal

Alex J. DeGrave et al.

Summary: Recent deep learning systems to detect COVID-19 from chest radiographs may rely on confounding factors rather than medical pathology, leading to accuracy issues when tested in new hospitals. The approach to obtain training data for these AI systems introduces a nearly ideal scenario for learning spurious shortcuts, raising concerns in medical-imaging AI. Evaluation of models on external data is insufficient to ensure reliance on medically relevant pathology, highlighting the importance of explainable AI for clinical deployment of machine-learning healthcare models.

Wearable sensor data and self-reported symptoms for COVID-19 detection

Giorgio Quer et al.

Summary: The study developed a smartphone app that combines smartwatch and activity tracker data to monitor COVID-19 infection continuously. The combination of symptom and sensor data showed better performance in distinguishing COVID-19 positive from negative cases compared to models that consider symptoms alone. This suggests that passive data collection from personal sensors may complement virus testing methods.
