Toxicity evaluation of polypropylene microplastic on marine microcrustacean Artemia salina: An analysis of implications and vulnerability

Jeyaraj Jeyavani et al.

Summary: Polypropylene microplastic particles are a major pollutant in marine ecosystems, and their toxic effects on aquatic organisms are still unknown. In this study, spherical polypropylene microplastics were prepared and their toxic effects on different life stages of marine microcrustacean Artemia salina were assessed. The results showed that the accumulation of microplastics in the organism led to changes in homeostasis, increased oxidative burst, and mortality in nauplii and metanauplii. In addition, the swimming behavior of juvenile Artemia was changed and the consumption of microplastics disrupted antioxidant biomarkers and the activity of acetylcholinesterase. Histological damage was also observed in the epithelial cells of juvenile Artemia. This study suggests that exposure to polypropylene microplastics is more harmful to zooplanktonic organisms in the marine ecosystem.

Toxicity of nanoplastics for zebrafish embryos, what we know and where to go next

Monica Torres-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Studies on the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on zebrafish embryo development show that size, concentration, and exposure time do not significantly affect organism responses or cellular responses. Larger nanoplastics mainly accumulate in the gut, while smaller ones can reach internal organs. Effects on locomotion and heart rate are more commonly associated with smaller nanoplastics.

Weathering Plastics as a Planetary Boundary Threat: Exposure, Fate, and Hazards

Hans Peter H. Arp et al.

Summary: The weathering of plastic pollution in the marine environment poses a threat to the planetary boundary with increasing exposure, poorly reversible pollution fate processes, and potential toxicological hazards exceeding thresholds in sensitive environments. Further research is needed to understand how increasing exposure and continuous weathering processes modulate toxicological hazards and to better parameterize the planetary boundary threshold for plastic pollution.
