A multivariate non-parametric approach for estimating probability of exceeding the local natural background level of arsenic in the aquifers of Calabria region (Southern Italy)

C. Apollaro et al.

Summary: The concept of natural background level (NBL) aims at distinguishing natural and anthropogenic contributions to groundwater contaminant concentrations, and an integrated probabilistic approach combining aquifer-based preselection criteria and multivariate non-parametric geostatistics has been proposed to assess NBL, providing contamination risk management tools.

Groundwater vulnerability to pollution in karst aquifers, considering key challenges and considerations: application to the Ubrique springs in southern Spain

Ana I. Marin et al.

Summary: Groundwater vulnerability mapping is a useful tool for analyzing sensitivity to pollution, but validation remains a challenge. Due to geological complexity, validation is crucial for karst media.

Hydrochemical Characteristics and Controlling Factors of Typical Dolomite Karst Basin in Humid Subtropical Zone

Shizhen Xiao et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the hydrochemical characteristics and variation rules in humid subtropical dolomite karst basins are mainly controlled by geological background and rock weathering water-rocks interaction. Seasonal variations have little impact on ion concentrations, with a dilution effect in rainy seasons but relatively stable ion concentrations.

Sources and pollution path identification of PAHs in karst aquifers: an example from Liulin karst water system, northern China

Xiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in karst water in the Liulin karst water system of northern China, revealing that the main sources are local combustion of fuels and surface runoff. The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in karst water gradually increased along the flow path, with the highest concentrations observed in coal mining and discharge areas. The study suggests a new technical method for tracing the sources and pollution paths of organic pollution in karst water systems.

Identification of Preferential Recharge Zones in Karst Systems Based on the Correlation between the Spring Level and Precipitation: A Case Study from Jinan Spring Basin

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: The Jinan spring basin in northern China is an important source of water, but there is a lack of research on preferential recharge zones. The study found a strong correlation between spring level and precipitation, and identified potential preferential recharge zones through correlation analysis and geological data. These findings support spring protection and water supply projects in karst regions.
