A review of rare earth elements and yttrium in coal ash: Content, modes of occurrences, combustion behavior, and extraction methods

Biao Fu et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes recent progress in the study of REY in coal ash, evaluating the content, speciation, and extraction potentials of REY. It discusses the different forms, distribution behavior, and transformation mechanisms of REY in coal ash, and proposes possible retention mechanisms of REY by aluminosilicate glass at boiler temperature. The modification of REY speciation in fly ash by reactions with flue gas components and current extraction techniques for REY recovery from coal combustion ash are also highlighted.

Microfluidic fabrication of novel polymeric core-shell microcapsules for storage of CO2 solvents and organic chelating agents

Yuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Monodispersed polymeric microcapsules loaded with CO2 solvents or chelating agents were successfully produced by capillary microfluidics. The poly(HDDA) shell exhibited better mechanical stability and resistance to shell buckling, while the NOA81 and PDMS shells underwent morphological changes during freeze drying. Embedding carbon-based nanomaterials into the PDMS matrix improved the storage stability and buckling resistance of PDMS shells. All fabricated shells showed thermal stability up to 300 degrees C.

The Recycling of Coal Fly Ash: A Review on Sustainable Developments and Economic Considerations

Amanda Qinisile Vilakazi et al.

Summary: The opportunities for recycling and utilizing coal fly ash (CFA) have increased in the past two decades. However, there are still limitations in commercialization, and disposal and management are major concerns. CFA is currently commercially feasible in the building and construction industry, but alternative uses such as metal extraction and wastewater purification are being explored. Challenges include the generation of secondary solid residues (SSR) and the need for downstream processing. To make CFA a more attractive commercial resource, complete and holistic utilization in different applications is necessary.

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on deep eutectic solvent for elemental impurities determination in oral and parenteral drugs by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

Fernanda C. Pinheiro et al.

Summary: A new pretreatment method using ICP OES has been developed for the determination of Cd, Co, Hg, Ni, Pb, and V in drug samples. By optimizing the DLLME procedure with a DES solvent, the analytical capabilities have been significantly improved with lower LOQ values and higher enrichment factors compared to direct ICP OES analysis. Trueness evaluation showed satisfactory recovery and RSD values, meeting the recommended standards by USP Chapter 232.

Characterization of rare earth elements present in coal ash by sequential extraction

Sungyoon Park et al.

Summary: This study examined the binding characteristics of REEs within coal ash and found that the majority of REEs are strongly bound in the residual fraction, requiring the use of strong acids for extraction. Additionally, it was discovered that a significant portion of REEs can be recovered from wastewaters produced during coal ash-derived zeolite synthesis.
