Shear stress relaxation through the motion of edge dislocations in Cu and Cu-Ni solid solution: A molecular dynamics and discrete dislocation study

I. A. Bryukhanov et al.

Summary: Shear stress relaxation through the motion of multiple edge dislocations is analyzed using molecular dynamics and discrete dislocation methods. It is found that relaxation occurs due to dislocation motion when dislocations are sufficiently far apart, exceeding the anisotropic speed of sound. Dependency of stress relaxation mechanism on dislocation density is shown, with stress decreasing as density increases.

Spall and recompression processes with double shock loading of polycrystalline copper

JiaNan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates shock-induced spall and subsequent recompression processes of polycrystalline copper using molecular dynamics simulations. Two significant velocity peaks are observed in the velocity history of the free surface, which can be explained by the complex propagation of waves and dynamic damage processes. The overshoot feature in the free-surface velocities is noted due to the shock response of the damaged region. Recrystallization occurs after the secondary shock passes through the spall region, with differences in recrystallization processes observed for different shock response states induced by secondary shock waves. Additionally, a reduction in grain sizes in the spall region is revealed in the simulations, consistent with experimental results.

Atomistic simulation of the shock wave in copper single crystals with pre-existing dislocation network

I. A. Bryukhanov

Summary: In molecular dynamics simulations of shock compression and spall fracture in [111] copper single crystals with pre-existing dislocations, it is found that the increase in dislocation density behind the shock wave is quadratic and independent of the initial dislocation density. Pre-existing dislocations almost do not affect the spall strength but significantly slow down the spall process, resulting in a more ductile fracture.

Sudden change of spall strength induced by shock defects based on atomistic simulation of single crystal aluminum

Dong-Dong Jiang et al.

Summary: This letter reveals the detailed mechanism behind the discontinuous variation in spall strength caused by shock-induced microstructure. Molecular dynamics simulations on single-crystal aluminum demonstrate that the nucleation of nanovoids in different regions, such as elastic deformation and phase transition versus dislocation and stacking faults, significantly influences the spall strength. Furthermore, different nucleation modes exhibit distinct temperature dependence and do not follow an inverse relationship with temperature.

Vladimir Promakhov et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of measuring the spall strength and elastic-plastic properties of high-strength heat-resistant nickel-chromium alloy Inconel 625 obtained by direct laser deposition method under dynamic and static loads. The study found that the spall strength of the additive samples does not depend on the direction of deposition, while the Hugoniot elastic limit of samples loaded perpendicular to the deposition direction is about 10% higher. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between compression stresses and material properties in different loading conditions.
