Selenium exerts protective effects against heat stress-induced barrier disruption and inflammation response in jejunum of growing pigs

Ying He et al.

Summary: The study showed that organic Se supplementation with HMSeBA can alleviate the negative effects of HS on the jejunum of growing pigs, improving villus height and reducing protein overexpression induced by heat stress, while its protective effect is related to the response of corresponding selenoproteins.

Determination of optimal dietary selenium levels by full expression of selenoproteins in various tissues of broilers from 22 to 42 d of age

Chuanlong Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the optimal dietary selenium level for broilers aged 22 to 42 days. The results showed that supplemental selenium level affected the selenium concentration and selenoprotein expression in various tissues of broilers. The optimal dietary selenium levels were 0.49 mg/kg to support maximum selenium concentrations and 0.37 mg/kg to support full expression of selenoproteins.

Gene Set Enrichment Analysis of Selenium-Deficient and High-Selenium Rat Liver Transcript Expression and Comparison With Turkey Liver Expression

Roger A. Sunde

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of selenium status on rat liver transcript expression data and compare it with turkey liver transcript expression. The results showed that high selenium intake led to significant changes in gene sets related to various conditions, indicating potential toxicity. However, no common transcripts or pathways were identified between rats and turkeys, suggesting that adaptation to high selenium intake may not be regulated at the transcriptional level.

Influences of Selenium-Enriched Yeast on Growth Performance, Immune Function, and Antioxidant Capacity in Weaned Pigs Exposure to Oxidative Stress

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that dietary selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) supplementation can mitigate the negative effects of oxidative stress on growth performance in weaned pigs by enhancing antioxidant capacity and immune function, while suppressing inflammatory responses. Additionally, SeY supplementation improved the digestibility of nutrients and reduced the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines and liver enzymes in pigs exposed to oxidative stress. Furthermore, SeY supplementation upregulated antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expression related to antioxidant signaling pathways, ultimately reducing oxidative damage and improving overall health in weaned pigs.

Selenium deficiency induces spleen pathological changes in pigs by decreasing selenoprotein expression, evoking oxidative stress, and activating inflammation and apoptosis

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: This study established a Se-deficient pig model and found that Se deficiency induces spleen injury through regulation of selenoproteins, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. The findings showed decreased erythroid parameters, increased osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, altered spleen structure, and splenocyte apoptosis in response to Se deficiency.

Summary: Deficiency in microminerals, particularly selenium, can lead to health issues in both humans and animals, impacting animal production and reproductive performance. Supplementation of organic selenium through diet can improve performance and egg quality in hens, while also supporting a healthy microbiome. Organic selenium sources such as bacterial selenoproteins or selenium yeast have a positive impact on laying performance, egg quality, intestinal health, and microbial balance in hens.

Maternal organic selenium supplementation alleviates LPS induced inflammation, autophagy and ER stress in the thymus and spleen of offspring piglets by improving the expression of selenoproteins

Dajiang Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal supplementation of HMSeBA during gestation helps to improve selenoprotein expression in the thymus and spleen of young piglets, reduce the expression of inflammation and autophagy-related proteins, and enhance antioxidative capacity. In addition, HMSeBA can reverse the adverse effects of oxidative stress, inflammation, and autophagy induced by LPS.
