Retinal cadherins and the retinal cadherinopathies: Current concepts and future directions

Imran H. Yusuf et al.

Summary: Cadherins are a superfamily of intercellular adhesion molecules that play important roles in tissue morphogenesis, neural circuit formation, and maintenance of the retina. Mutations in genes encoding cadherins have been identified as causes of inherited retinal degeneration. This review summarizes the classification and function of cadherins in the inner and outer retina, and provides an overview of the molecular genetics and clinical phenotypes of monogenic retinal cadherinopathies.

ERK/MAPK signalling in the developing brain: Perturbations and consequences

Joy D. Iroegbu et al.

Summary: The ERK/MAPK signaling pathway plays a crucial role in neurodevelopment, particularly in the development of neural progenitor cells and the proper formation of the nervous system. It is associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting its significance in understanding the pathology of these disorders and identifying potential novel therapeutic targets.

Novel TTLL5 Variants Associated with Cone-Rod Dystrophy and Early-Onset Severe Retinal Dystrophy

Vasily Smirnov et al.

Summary: Variants of the TTLL5 gene have been identified as a rare cause of cone dystrophy (COD) or cone-rod dystrophy (CORD). This study reports on five patients with biallelic variants of TTLL5, highlighting the importance of large deletions and suggesting that patients lacking variants in known genes may harbor CNVs to be discovered in TTLL5. Variable phenotypes in TTLL5-associated patients may be due to the presence of additional gene defects.

Piezo2 mechanosensitive ion channel is located to sensory neurons and nonneuronal cells in rat peripheral sensory pathway: implications in pain

Seung Min Shin et al.

Summary: Piezo2 is widely expressed in the peripheral sensory pathway of rats, not only in neurons but also in the spinal cord, Schwann cells, and skin melanocytes. Aberrant expression of Piezo2 may contribute to the pathogenesis of pain.

TGF-β/Smad Signalling in Neurogenesis: Implications for Neuropsychiatric Diseases

Lih-Fhung Hiew et al.

Summary: Research on TGF-beta/Smad signaling has shown its significance in neurogenesis and its potential impact on neuropsychiatric disorders. The relationship between TGF-beta/Smad signaling and neurogenesis in response to stressors suggests a role in stress response regulation and behavioral outcomes of mood disorders. Modifications to these signaling pathways have been found to have diverse effects on neurogenesis, highlighting the complexity of the interactions involved.
