A systematic review on papers that study on Single Nucleotide Polymorphism that affects coronavirus 2019 severity

Siyeon Suh et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a global threat that directly and indirectly affects the entire population. Multiple studies have been conducted to understand the transmission and severity of the disease, revealing that ACE2, TMPRSS2, and IFITM3 are key genes involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection, with certain SNPs associated with increased infection and severity.

Evaluation and improvement of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) for COVID-19: a multi-hospital study

Ewan Carr et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of using NEWS2 score to predict severe COVID-19 outcomes, and found that adding a set of blood and physiological parameters can improve risk stratification accuracy. However, there were issues of miscalibration in external validation, highlighting the need for a better understanding of the use of early warning scores for COVID-19.

Identification and Computational Analysis of Rare Variants of Known Hearing Loss Genes Present in Five Deaf Members of a Pakistani Kindred

Irum Badshah Saleem et al.

Summary: This study highlights the phenotypic and genetic complexity of inherited hearing loss in a large consanguineous Pakistani kindred, identifying candidate disease-associated variants in five known deafness genes. More functional studies are needed to confirm the pathogenicity of the identified variants, as most of them were classified as uncertain significance based on current guidelines.

Genetic Risk Prediction of COVID-19 Susceptibility and Severity in the Indian Population

P. Prakrithi et al.

Summary: Host genetic variants play a role in susceptibility to COVID-19 infection and severity. A study on diverse Indian sub-populations revealed that genetic risk scores can predict differences in COVID-19 outcomes. Combining genetic risk scores with other risk factors may improve prediction models for identifying high COVID-19 risk groups and optimizing public health resource allocation.

Genome-wide association study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United Arab Emirates

Mira Mousa et al.

Summary: This study identified eight genes highly associated with hospitalized cases of COVID-19 through a genome-wide association analysis. These genes are expressed in the lung and may be related to disease severity. Further research on global population genetics is needed to advance the development of population-specific therapeutics for this global challenge.

De novo pathogenic variant in SETX causes a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder of early childhood-onset with severe axonal polyneuropathy

Aristides Hadjinicolaou et al.

Summary: Pathogenic variants in SETX can lead to two distinct neurological diseases, ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis type 4 (ALS4). By using transcriptional network analysis, this study identified a novel SETX mutation in two unrelated patients with severe neuropathy, expanding the clinical spectrum of SETX-related disorders. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified disease-associated modules specific to ALS4 but not AOA2, demonstrating the distinct disease-specific signatures and confirming the pathogenicity of the identified SETX variant.

Mapping the human genetic architecture of COVID-19

Mari E. K. Niemi et al.

Summary: The genetic make-up of an individual plays a role in susceptibility and response to viral infections. A global network of researchers identified 13 significant genetic loci associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 cases. Mendelian randomization analyses suggest a causal role for smoking and body-mass index in severe COVID-19. Collaboration among human genetics researchers has allowed for the discovery of novel host genetic factors linked to COVID-19.
