Venous cerebral blood flow quantification and cognition in patients with sickle cell anemia

Hanne Stotesbury et al.

Summary: Using arterial spin labelling (ASL), this study quantified high venous signal in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and explored its associations with arterial oxygen content, disease-modifying treatments, cerebral infarction, and cognitive performance. The findings suggest the usefulness of multiTI ASL in objectively quantifying and identifying markers of regional hemodynamic stress in patients with SCA.

Brain injury pathophysiology study by a multimodal approach in children with sickle cell anemia with no intra or extra cranial arteriopathy

Valentine Brousse et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the pathophysiology and treatment methods of silent cerebral infarcts (SCI) in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The study found that children with SCI have decreased blood pressure, impaired blood rheology, increased P-selectin levels, and marked anemia. ASL may serve as an additional screening tool, and early treatment can reduce the risk of this complication.

Summary: This study confirmed that the venous hyperintense signal in ASL images of SCA patients may be related to disturbances in oxygen exchange efficiency and small vessel pathology.

Hemodynamic impairments within individual watershed areas in asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis by multimodal MRI

Stephan Kaczmarz et al.

Summary: Improved understanding of complex hemodynamic impairments in asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis is crucial for better stroke risk assessment. MRI-based perfusion and oxygenation parameters offer deeper perspectives on microvascular impairments, with most pronounced changes detected within individual watershed areas.

Tract-specific analysis and neurocognitive functioning in sickle cell patients without history of overt stroke

Yaqiong Chai et al.

Summary: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin molecules in red blood cells. Patients with SCD are at increased risk for strokes and neurocognitive deficits. The study utilized tract-specific analysis (TSA) to evaluate white matter (WM) damage in SCD patients and found disruptions in WM microstructure metrics, particularly in the corpus callosum and other major WM tracts.

MRI detection of brain abnormality in sickle cell disease

Hanne Stotesbury et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that quantitative MRI techniques can identify structural and hemodynamic biomarkers associated with the risk of neurological and neurocognitive complications in patients with sickle cell disease. Evidence suggests that these biomarkers are sensitive to changes with treatments like blood transfusion and hydroxyurea, making them potential endpoints in future clinical trials of novel approaches. With further validation, these techniques may also improve risk stratification for neurological and neurocognitive complications in this vulnerable population.

Reduced global cerebral oxygen metabolic rate in sickle cell disease and chronic anemias

Chau Vu et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic anemia, such as sickle cell disease, demonstrate decreased cerebral oxygen extraction and metabolism compared to healthy controls, with the impairment proportional to the severity of anemia. The study also shows striking agreement between the current findings and historical data from anemia patients with various etiologies.

Cerebral Oxygen Metabolic Stress, Microstructural Injury, and Infarction in Adults With Sickle Cell Disease

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the relationships between cerebral hemodynamic and oxygen metabolic stress, microstructural injury, and infarct location in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). Elevated OEF in SCD patients predicted increased MD, suggesting a link between oxygen metabolic stress and microstructural injury. This finding may aid in individualizing therapeutic strategies for SCD patients.
