Gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes age-related atrial fibrillation by lipopolysaccharide and glucose-induced activation of NLRP3-inflammasome

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) rat model, it was demonstrated that the high AF susceptibility of aged rats could be transmitted to a young host. Inhibition of inflammasome by a potent and selective inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome resulted in a lower atrial fibrosis and AF susceptibility. Clinical studies showed that serum LPS and glucose levels were progressively increased in elderly patients compared to young individuals, with similar results confirmed in clinical AF patients.

Interactions between gut microbiota and berberine, a necessary procedure to understand the mechanisms of berberine

Hao Cheng et al.

Summary: This review provides a systematic and comprehensive summary of the interactions between berberine (BBR) and gut microbiota, as well as their corresponding influences on pharmacological effects. The review discusses the regulatory effects of BBR on gut microbiota composition and metabolism, the metabolism of BBR by gut microbiota, the complex interactions between gut microbiota and BBR, as well as the side effects and personalized use of BBR. The review also presents future research directions regarding BBR and gut microbiota.

Functions of Gut Microbiota Metabolites, Current Status and Future Perspectives

Juan Liu et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining the physiological functions of hosts by providing signaling metabolites. However, disturbed production of these metabolites can lead to various diseases. This paper discusses the types and ways of action of gut microbiota metabolites, as well as their physiological and pathological functions, such as shaping the composition of the microbiota and acting as nutrition. Understanding the roles of gut microbiota metabolites can guide the development of therapeutic strategies for microbial-driven diseases.

Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Renal and Cardiovascular Complications of Diabetes

Amelia Charlton et al.

Summary: The progressive nature of type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to micro- and macro-vascular complications, including renal and cardiovascular disease, which are major causes of premature morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Oxidative stress and inflammation are considered major drivers in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, and emerging therapies target these crucial pathways to alleviate the burden of the diseases.

Berberine regulates macrophage polarization through IL-4-STAT6 signaling pathway in Helicobacter pylori-induced chronic atrophic gastritis

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that BBR can inhibit M1-polarized Mfs induced by H. pylori and LPS, and promote M2-polarized Mfs. BBR can protect gastric epithelial cells from damage caused by M1-polarized Mfs, which may be related to the inhibition of M1-polarized Mfs, promotion of M2-polarized Mfs, and activation of the IL-4-STAT6 signaling pathway by BBR.

Berberine for the treatment of hypertension: A systematic review

Marco Tullio Suadoni et al.

Summary: This review investigated the effect of berberine on blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk, finding that berberine showed moderate reductions in systolic blood pressure compared to some medications or placebo. However, due to the heterogeneity among studies and limited conclusions, the evidence around berberine's effectiveness in treating hypertension is inconclusive. Researchers should focus on improving the quality of studies and measuring meaningful clinical endpoints in future research.

Summary: Heart failure is a growing health burden globally, characterized by alterations in excitation-contraction coupling, cardiac energy deficit, and oxidative stress. While targeting metabolism may provide prognostic benefits, treatments specifically targeting reactive oxygen species (ROS) are still in preclinical stages. More research is needed in this area to develop effective therapies for heart failure.

Protein Kinases Mediate Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Cannabidiol and Estradiol Against High Glucose in Cardiac Sodium Channels

Mohamed A. Fouda et al.

Summary: Inflammation or high glucose conditions alter the biophysical properties of the cardiac voltage-gated sodium channel, leading to prolonged action potentials and potentially causing arrhythmia. Protein kinases A and C mediate these effects, while CBD and E-2 have cardioprotective effects that mitigate the detrimental effects induced by high glucose/inflammation.

Summary: Chronic intake of fructose may contribute to metabolic diseases and cardiac inflammation, with recent findings highlighting the significant role of the small intestine in fructose metabolism. Overconsumption of fructose leads to dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, increased intestinal permeability, and activation of host inflammation, affecting cardiac health.
