Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is neuroprotective in a chronic mouse model of Parkinson's disease

Elvis Cuevas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) in a progressive model of Parkinson's disease (PD). The results showed that TUDCA pretreatment protected dopaminergic neurons against damage, attenuated inflammation and oxidative stress, and inhibited autophagy and alpha-synuclein aggregation. These findings suggest that TUDCA may have therapeutic effects on PD progression.

Bile Acids: A Communication Channel in the Gut-Brain Axis

Vera F. Monteiro-Cardoso et al.

Summary: Bile acids are signalling hormones involved in the regulation of metabolic pathways, modulated by the gut microbiome. Gut bacteria send signals to the central nervous system, impacting brain function. Despite increasing understanding of the role of bile acids in the central nervous system, little is known about their molecular mechanisms and physiological roles.

Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis Is Associated with Elevated Bile Acids in Parkinson's Disease

Peipei Li et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome can impact brain health and is altered in Parkinson's disease. The vermiform appendix, a lymphoid tissue in the cecum, is implicated in the storage and regulation of the gut microbiota. Changes in the appendix microbiome in PD patients include dysbiosis affecting lipid metabolism and an increase in toxic bile acids.

Takeda G Protein-Coupled Receptor 5 Modulates Depression-like Behaviors via Hippocampal CA3 Pyramidal Neurons Afferent to Dorsolateral Septum

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that TGR5 can regulate depression through the CA3 PyNs-somatostatin-GABAergic neurons of dorsolateral septum transmission, indicating that TGR5 could be a novel target for developing antidepressants.
