Lithium therapy subdues neuroinflammation to maintain pyramidal cells arborization and rescues neurobehavioural impairments in ovariectomized rats

Anil Kumar Rana et al.

Summary: Estrogen deprivation during menopause leads to changes in brain neuronal circuit and neurobehavioral symptoms later in life. Hormone replacement therapy can partially alleviate these abnormalities but is associated with various adverse effects. This study investigated the effect of lithium therapy on neurobehavioral impairments in a rat model of ovariectomy, which mimics postmenopausal conditions. The results showed that lithium treatment protected against spatial and recognition memory impairments, as well as depression-like behavior in ovariectomized rats. Additionally, lithium treatment increased dendritic length and spine density in certain brain regions, reduced proinflammatory markers, normalized reactive astrogliosis, and modulated key signaling pathways. These findings suggest that lithium may be a potential therapeutic agent for managing postmenopausal neurological symptoms.

Exploration of the mechanism by which icariin modulates hippocampal neurogenesis in a rat model of depression

Ning-Xi Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism by which Icariin (ICA) protects against hippocampal injury in depression was investigated through proteomics analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. The results showed that ICA can prevent depression and dysfunctional hippocampal neurogenesis through regulating the expression of certain proteins found in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Pleiotropic effects of BDNF on the cerebellum and hippocampus: Implications for neurodevelopmental disorders

Serena Camuso et al.

Summary: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a highly studied neurotrophin in the mammalian brain, crucial for the development of neurons and synaptic plasticity. It is expressed at higher levels in brain areas such as cerebellum and hippocampus. Dysregulation of BDNF expression is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. Understanding the role of BDNF is important for researching and treating these disorders.

Berberine ameliorates ovariectomy-induced anxiety-like behaviors by enrichment in equol generating gut microbiota

Yuan Fang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that berberine alleviates postmenopausal anxiety by modulating the gut microbiota under estrogen-deficient conditions. Experimental anxiety in ovariectomized rats was significantly reduced after berberine treatment, which increased beneficial gut microbes and equol generation. The findings suggest that berberine modulation of the gut microbiota is a promising therapeutic strategy for alleviating postmenopausal symptoms of anxiety.

Michael Cronquist Christensen et al.

Summary: The study validates the clinical utility of the Oxford Depression Questionnaire (ODQ) in assessing emotional blunting in patients with MDD. After 8 weeks of vortioxetine treatment, there was a significant improvement in patients' ODQ scores, indicating a reduction in emotional blunting symptoms. The minimal clinically important difference in terms of change in ODQ-20 and ODQ-26 scores is suggested to be 16 and 20 points, respectively.

Summary: Depressive disorder is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by depressed mood and lack of interest or pleasure. Herbal medicine, such as Huang-lian Jie-du Decoction (HLJDD), has been explored as a complementary therapy for depression. This study demonstrates that HLJDD exhibits antidepressant effects by modulating tryptophan metabolism, serotonergic and dopaminergic synaptic activities, cAMP signaling pathway, and calcium signaling pathway, suggesting potential targets for its antidepressant action.

Berberine Suppresses Mice Depression Behaviors and Promotes Hippocampal Neurons Growth Through Regulating the miR-34b-5p/miR-470-5p/BDNF Axis

Yuhua Zhan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Berberine could inhibit depression behaviors and enhance hippocampal neuron growth by targeting miR-34b-5p and miR-470-5p in CUMS mice. Furthermore, it was found that BDNF was a target of miR-34b-5p and miR-470-5p, and the overexpression of BDNF could reverse the regulation of these miRNAs on depression behaviors and neuron growth. Additionally, Berberine could promote BDNF expression to regulate the progression of depression disorder.
