Hydrogenation of CO2 on Fe-Based Catalysts: Preferred Route to Renewable Liquid Fuels

Tomy Hos et al.

Summary: Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 can be conducted in one pot or two stages, and the decision should be based on catalyst stability and selectivity. Blending the liquid products from both processes with fossil fuels increases fuel production cost, which can be offset by higher carbon pricing or incentives.

Hydrogen-rich syngas production from biomass pyrolysis and catalytic reforming using biochar-based catalysts

Yanjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of residual biochar-based catalyst in catalytic reforming process after biomass pyrolysis. The results show that biochar has abundant pore structure and catalytic activity, which is favorable for bio-oil reforming. The addition of Ni to biochar enables it to act as a support, reducing NiO to active Ni and protecting Ni from oxidation. It is found that 10wt% Ni/Char catalyst at 650 degrees C yields the optimal syngas production of 34.321 mmol per 1 g biomass. The addition of water significantly increases syngas production due to the thorough utilization of biological carbon.

Dimethyl ether as circular hydrogen carrier: Catalytic aspects of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation steps

Enrico Catizzone et al.

Summary: The intermittent nature of renewable resources drives the development of energy storage technologies, with a focus on storing energy in the form of hydrogen chemically bound within organic molecules, such as dimethyl ether (DME). The potential environmental impact and societal benefits of DME as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) are being researched extensively, especially in the context of CO2 sequestration and utilization.

Inside the reaction mechanism of direct CO2 conversion to DME over zeolite-based hybrid catalysts

G. Bonura et al.

Summary: This study aims to shed light on the reaction mechanism of direct hydrogenation of CO2 into DME using hybrid catalysts. The results show that the synergy among active sites of different nature is crucial for overcoming the limitations of random mixing of preformed catalysts, and various catalyst features play a role in determining catalytic efficiency and selectivity patterns. Operating pressure and temperature are important factors for achieving high DME selectivity in the reaction process.

Preserving the Active Cu-ZnO Interface for Selective Hydrogenation of CO2 to Dimethyl Ether and Methanol

Xiaojing Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst was confined in mesoporous SiO2-Al2O3 shell via hydrothermal synthesis for selective hydrogenation of CO2 to dimethyl ether (DME) and methanol. The active Cu-0-ZnO interface in CZAS@SA was preserved due to the confinement effect of the shell, which improved methanol selectivity and increased the total selectivity of DME and methanol from 9.1% to 63.3%.

Summary: This study investigates the activity of a Cu/MgO catalyst for methanol synthesis from CO2 at low calcining temperature of 823 K. Results show that MgO is highly active in CO2 adsorption at this temperature and the Cu/MgO catalyst exhibits good catalytic activity and high selectivity for methanol. Overall, the relative conversion of CO2 was 76% with an overall selectivity for methanol of 59%, while the maximum selectivity for methanol in a single cycle reached 88%.

Promoting Effect of Supports with Oxygen Vacancies as Extrinsic Defects on the Reduction of Iron Oxide

Javier C. Mora et al.

Summary: The utilization of substrates with oxygen vacancies can effectively improve the reducibility of supported metal oxides. The study showed that support materials with extrinsic defects promote the reduction of iron oxide with lower activation energies, while those with intrinsic defects inhibit the reduction due to complex metal-support interactions. The influence of oxygen vacancies on the reducibility of iron oxides is rationalized in terms of different electronic/metal-support interactions.
