UAV-Based LiDAR Scanning for Individual Tree Detection and Height Measurement in Young Forest Permanent Trials

Summary: Installing research or permanent plots is a common task in growth and forest yield research. Individual tree detection (ITD) methods based on the Canopy Height Model (CHM) can accurately identify trees and measure tree height. Different ITD methods and CHM resolutions have an impact on the results, while point cloud measurements have almost no bias. Using UAV-based LiDAR scanning sensors for surveying and measurement is a precise and cost-effective method.

Moving to Automated Tree Inventory: Comparison of UAS-Derived Lidar and Photogrammetric Data with Manual Ground Estimates

Summary: Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have rapidly advanced in technology, allowing for low-cost capture of high-resolution images for deriving three-dimensional photogrammetric point clouds. This study evaluates the quality of three-dimensional datasets from two cameras and one lidar sensor collected over a managed pine stand with different planting densities. The results show that the higher-quality camera photogrammetric data is sufficient for individual tree detection and height determination, but lidar data is best overall. The automated tree detection algorithm performed well with lidar data, but slightly fell short in comparison to manual mensuration within the lidar point cloud.

Tree Height Measurements in Degraded Tropical Forests Based on UAV-LiDAR Data of Different Point Cloud Densities: A Case Study on Dacrydium pierrei in China

Summary: As the point cloud density increases, the accuracy of tree height extraction gradually improves, with 17 points/m² being a critical point for D. pierrei extraction. Compared to broad-leaved forests, the accuracy of D. pierrei height extraction from coniferous forest is higher. This study identified the lowest LiDAR data point cloud density required for a certain accuracy in tree height extraction.
