A framework for assessing coupling and de-coupling trajectories in river social-ecological systems

Cristina Quintas-Soriano et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a conceptual framework for characterizing trajectories of coupling and de-coupling in social-ecological river systems. By analyzing two conceptual scenarios and linking them to empirical case examples, key concepts for understanding social-ecological system trajectories are defined. Additionally, a quantitative approach for evaluating the level of social-ecological coupling and de-coupling trajectories in other contexts is proposed.

Localizing the Water-Energy Nexus: The Relationship between Solar Thermal Power Plants and Future Developments in Local Water Demand

Julia Terrapon-Pfaff et al.

Summary: This study examines the interdependencies and potential conflicts between energy and water at a local level, focusing on a case study conducted in Ouarzazate, Morocco. Through a mixed-method research design, the study develops regional water demand scenarios and evaluates water saving measures to support decision-making relating to energy and water development in the region.

Social-ecological interactions in the Draa River Basin, southern Morocco: Towards nature conservation and human well-being using the IPBES framework

Elisabeth Berger et al.

Summary: Water is essential for human societies and nature conservation, especially in arid regions. This study in southern Morocco analyzes the connections between people and nature in the water scarce Draa River Basin, using the IPBES framework to understand social-ecological system dynamics. The study found that environmental parameters influence invertebrate richness and community composition, and farmers have differing perceptions of water related changes in the basin.
