Life cycle environmental performance of two restaurant food waste management strategies at Shenzhen, China

Qianqian Yu et al.

Summary: A hybrid life cycle assessment was conducted to compare the separate treatment and joint treatment of restaurant food waste (RFW) with other municipal solid waste (MSW). The results show that separating RFW reduces carbon emissions, improves energy efficiency, and decreases acidic gases emissions.

Comprehensive insights into the organic fractions on solid-liquid separation performance of anaerobic digestates from food waste

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the solid-liquid separation performance of digestates from food waste is primarily affected by differences in organic fractions, with varying levels of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in different cities influencing dewaterability. The correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between soluble protein content and dewaterability, indicating that lower soluble protein levels result in better dewatering performance in digestates.

Solid digestate disposal strategies to reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption of food waste-based biogas systems

Ting Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the environmental impacts and energy consumption of three solid digestate treatment scenarios, finding that composting had the highest net energy consumption but the least environmental impact, while landfill showed the opposite pattern. There were significant differences in contributions of digestate treatment subunits among the scenarios, with substantial impacts on the 100-year global warming potential.

Variations of GHG emission patterns from waste disposal processes in megacity Shanghai from 2005 to 2015

Yijun Liu et al.

Summary: The study examined the evolution of waste disposal processes and greenhouse gas emissions in Shanghai from 2005 to 2015. It found that landfill was the main source of greenhouse gas emissions, while the GHG emission intensity of incineration was lower than that of landfill and composting. By implementing waste source sorting and incineration dominated disposal processes, greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by around 54.07% by 2030.

Life cycle assessment on the treatment of organic waste streams by anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization and incineration

Felix Mayer et al.

Summary: By analyzing the environmental and economic performance of custom treatment paths for organic waste streams in Germany, it was found that anaerobic digestion followed by spreading of digestate is beneficial for food waste and OFMSW, while direct incineration is a preferable option for waste wood. The implementation of an HTC process for OFMSW and food waste is also viable, but must be optimized for an environmentally friendly heat source. In some cases, cascading anaerobic digestion with the HTC-process can be a suitable alternative.
