Land Use, Landform, and Soil Management as Determinants of Soil Physicochemical Properties and Microbial Abundance of Lower Brahmaputra Valley, India

Surabhi Hota et al.

Summary: This study investigated the soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial population in the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam, India, under different landforms and land uses. The results revealed significant effects of landforms and land uses on soil properties, with paddy fields and banana systems having higher soil organic carbon content, while forests and rubber plantations showing higher very labile soil organic carbon content. The soil microbial populations also varied significantly across different land uses.

Spatiotemporal Patterns and Drivers of Land Use and Land Cover Change in the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor

Suocheng Dong et al.

Summary: The ecological environment in the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor (CMREC) has deteriorated, with forests being the largest source of unused land and urban areas consistently expanding. China has the highest urbanization rate and experienced a prominent increase in forest revegetation. Railways are identified as the most important factor in driving land use and land cover change (LUCC) in the region.

A review of land use/land cover change mapping in the China-Central Asia-West Asia economic corridor countries

Summary: The study identified rapid urbanization, industrialization, population growth, and climate change as major causes of LULCC in the China-Central Asia-West Asia Economic Corridor. LULCC leads to environmental issues, and the lack of national land use data and reliable datasets for studying long-term LULCC were also highlighted as challenges in the region.

Linking Local Infrastructure Development and Deforestation: Evidence from Satellite and Administrative Data

Christian Baehr et al.

Summary: The role that local development plays in slowing or hastening environmental degradation in the developing world is still uncertain. A study in Cambodia found that irrigation investments improved nearby forests, while rural road projects did not worsen forest conditions on average. Tailored policies supporting local infrastructure can improve both rural livelihoods and forest conditions.
