Urban greenspace access, uses, and values: A case study of user perceptions in metropolitan ravine parks

Monika Oviedo et al.

Summary: Urban greenspaces provide critical ecosystem services to residents, with cultural ecosystem services being the most prominent. Understanding greenspace users' perspectives is important for park planners to address their preferences, concerns, and potential conflicts. This study conducted a survey, park audit, and qualitative analysis in Toronto's ravine parks, revealing a wide variation in user characteristics and values. Conflicts between users with different values and expectations were also identified. The findings and recommendations from this case study can be valuable for similar forested, urban greenspaces.

Perceptions of park visitors on access to urban parks and benefits of green spaces

Sukanya Basu et al.

Summary: Limited research has been done on access to public green spaces in cities of the global South. A study in Hyderabad, India, found that there are stark gender and income inequalities in access to parks. Wealthy visitors are willing to pay entry fees while low income visitors face barriers, leading to uneven access to green space. Some parks have been converted into landscaped areas with entry charges, limiting access to ecosystem services for low income residents.
