Alternative water supply systems to achieve the net zero water use goal in high-density mixed-use buildings

Niloufar Naserisafavi et al.

Summary: This research evaluates alternative water supply scenarios to explore the feasibility of achieving the net zero water (NZW) use target in mixed-use buildings. While the goal of NZW use was not fully achieved, the three performance indicators showed significant reductions in net water flows. A hybrid utilization of rainwater and treated greywater may be the preferred option for mixed-use buildings in a temperate climate.

Performance evaluation and boron rejection in a SWRO system under variable operating conditions

A. Ruiz-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance and boron rejection of a single-stage seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system under variable operating conditions. Results showed differences in boron rejection and water production between different membrane elements. When designing RES-powered SWRO systems, consideration should be given to the safe operating range of boron concentration and the variation of membrane permeability coefficients.

Power generation system based on pressure retarded osmosis with a commercially-available hollow fiber PRO membrane module using seawater and freshwater

Kei Matsuyama et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the feasibility of a power generation system adopting pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) using seawater and fresh water. The authors measured the membrane power density of a commercially available hollow fiber membrane module. The evaluation suggests that the current membrane power density needs to be increased to achieve a commercially feasible power plant using PRO.
