The influence of deviating conditions on levee failure rates

Job J. Kool et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for assessing the annual failure rate of levees based on historical flood information and the return period of past events. It also develops an approach to quantify the influence of deviating conditions on failure rates and analyzes the presence of deviations using satellite observations. The study finds that the presence of geological deviations significantly affects the observed failure rate, which increases with the magnitude of the hydraulic loading.

Enriching flood risk analyses with distributions of soil mechanical parameters through the statistical analysis of classification experiments

Niklas Schwiersch et al.

Summary: This article presents a method to indirectly obtain the distributions of soil mechanical parameters by using empirical correlation terms to transform classification test data. The method was applied to a dataset collected throughout Germany, resulting in plausible distributions for 2/3 of the 13 soil classes considered. It recommends the validation of results by expanding (inter)national databases with samples of the considered soil mechanical parameters due to the current poor validation basis.

Developing Flood Vulnerability Functions through Questionnaire Survey for Flood Risk Assessments in the Meghna Basin, Bangladesh

Islam M. Khairul et al.

Summary: This study developed synthetic Flood Damage Functions (FDFs) based on questionnaire survey data to assess flood vulnerability in agriculture and rural households in Bangladesh. The results revealed that there were minimal yield losses in rice crops at lower water levels, while mud houses and household property were found to be the most flood-vulnerable.

Compound inland flood events: different pathways, different impacts and different coping options

Annegret H. Thieken et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes how differently affected residents coped with different types of floods (fluvial and pluvial) and their impacts in Germany. The study found significant differences in the pathways, hydraulic and financial impacts, recovery, warning processes, and coping and adaptive behavior between the four flood pathways. Although there were only small differences in perceived self-efficacy and responsibility, tailored risk communication and support can improve property-level adaptation.

Super-Resolution Mapping Based on Spatial-Spectral Correlation for Spectral Imagery

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a super-resolution mapping method based on spatial-spectral correlation to overcome the influences of imaging conditions on landcover class mapping. By combining spatial and spectral correlations, more accurate mapping results are obtained.

A transient backward erosion piping model based on laminar flow transport equations

Manuel Wewer et al.

Summary: Backward erosion piping is an internal erosion process that compromises the stability of water retaining structures. A proposed transient piping model combines a 2D Darcy groundwater solution with Exner's 1D sediment transport mass conservation equation and recommends the use of Yalin's approach for simulating backward erosion piping in similar dike configurations.

A Bayesian hindcasting method of levee failures applied to the Breitenhagen slope failure

J. J. Kool et al.

Summary: The paper discusses how probabilistic Bayesian techniques can enhance the hindcasting process of levee failures, allowing for systematic analysis of multiple scenarios and model choices to accurately describe the causes of failure. A case study of the levee failure near Breitenhagen, Germany in 2013 highlights the factors of locally weak soil conditions and high water pressures triggering the failure, potentially caused by a previous breach at the location.
