The mediating effect of air pollution in the impacts of urban form on nighttime urban heat island intensity

Summary: The study found that the fractal dimension of urban planar shape influences the intensity of urban heat island (UHI) through air pollution, and the mediating effects of urban continuity and urban elongation are also significant. Controlling urban population density and optimizing urban geometry can improve urban thermal environment. It is recommended to properly elongate and decentralize urban form, and avoid disorderly urban sprawl, especially in cities with severe air pollution.
