Same materials, bigger output: A reversibly transformable 2D-3D photothermal evaporator for highly efficient solar steam generation

Yida Wang et al.

Summary: A transformable photothermal evaporator is designed to switch between 2D flat and 3D spiral structures, demonstrating significantly enhanced evaporation rate and optimized water transportation. The 3D spiral structure takes advantage of convective flow to fully activate and enhance evaporation, resulting in a much higher evaporation rate compared to the 2D flat structure.

A new insight on enhanced Pb(II) removal by sludge biochar catalyst coupling with ultrasound irradiation and its synergism with phenol removal

Zeng-Hui Diao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the applicability of sludge biochar catalyst (SBC) coupling with ultrasound (US) for the simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and phenol. Results show that the SBC/US process has a superior removal performance for Pb(II) compared to SBC without US, and can also remove coexisting metal ions along with Pb(II). The synergistic removal of Pb(II) and phenol by SBC/US process involves adsorption, precipitation, reduction, and Fenton-like oxidation processes.

Enhancing Fenton-like process at neutral pH by Fe(III)-GLDA complexation for the oxidation removal of organic pollutants

Hejun Ren et al.

Summary: Utilizing N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic acid (GLDA) in Fe(III) mediated Fenton-like oxidation significantly enhances the removal of organic pollutants at neutral pH. The acceleration of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle caused by GLDA contributes to the increased degradation rate of pollutants, especially ciprofloxacin (CIP), in the GLDA/Fe(III)/H2O2 system. The complexation of GLDA with Fe(III) modifies the redox potential and enhances the generation of hydroxyl radicals, leading to efficient pollutant degradation.

Larger floods reduce soil CO2 efflux during the post-flooding phase in seasonally-flooded forests of Western Amazonia

Emma M. Docherty et al.

Summary: The seasonally-flooded varzea forests in Western Amazonia are highly productive and biodiverse wetland forests. Data on soil CO2 emissions, organic matter decomposition rates, and soil carbon stocks are scarce, but the impact of hydrological changes, particularly increased floods, on soil carbon cycles remains uncertain. This study in Peru's Pacaya Samiria National Reserve found that flood height and soil moisture significantly affected soil CO2 efflux rate, while decomposition rate remained relatively unaffected. Larger floods are likely to decrease CO2 efflux, with decomposition processes becoming more anaerobic.
