A high-performance, solution-processable polymer/ceramic/ionic liquid electrolyte for room temperature solid-state Li metal batteries

Xiujing Lin et al.

Summary: All-solid-state electrolytes provide a guarantee for the safe operation of Li metal batteries with high energy density, but face challenges of low ionic conductivity and huge interfacial impedance with lithium anodes. The introduction of ionic liquids is expected to solve these issues, as shown in this study where an in situ LiF-rich solid-electrolyte interface on the lithium anode was triggered by the reductive decomposition of IL and Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3-involved electrolyte, leading to stable Li plating/stripping behavior and high performance in solid-state LMBs.

PEO based polymer in plastic crystal electrolytes for room temperature high-voltage lithium metal batteries

Yulong Liu et al.

Summary: A novel type of poly(ethylene oxide) based polymer in plastic crystal electrolyte was designed to achieve stable cathode/electrolyte and anode/electrolyte interfaces simultaneously through strong intermolecular interactions. The Li-Li symmetric cells with the polymer in plastic crystal electrolyte exhibited stable operation for 700 hours at 1 mA cm(-2) and delivered a high discharge capacity of 169 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention of 80% after 120 cycles, even at a high cut-off voltage of 4.4 V. This work highlights the development of PEO-based electrolytes with higher energy density through intermolecular design.

A multifunctional artificial protective layer for producing an ultra-stable lithium metal anode in a commercial carbonate electrolyte

Song Li et al.

Summary: The study presents a multifunctional artificial protective layer formed on a Li metal anode, which exhibits ultra-stability in the commercial carbonate electrolyte and effectively suppresses Li dendrite growth and side reactions. This protective layer induces the formation of a unique solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that has good chemical stability with the carbonate liquid electrolyte.

Oxygen-defect-rich coating with nanoporous texture as both anode host and artificial SEI for dendrite-mitigated lithium-metal batteries

Qingping Wu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a nanoporous MgOx coating with enriched oxygen defects bonded with carboxyl-rich carbon wires (MgOx-C) as both a 3D monolithic host and an artificial SEI film to enable dendrite-free Li metal batteries. This conductive porous anode host helps homogenize the Li deposition process, accommodate volume variation, and mitigate space charge depletion. The highly defective MgOx enables fast charge transfer, resulting in high-rate Li plating performance.
