In silico design and analysis of Pt functionalized graphene-based FET sensor for COVID-19 biomarkers: A DFT coupled FEM study

Paramjot Singh et al.

Summary: This study designed a sensor for detecting COVID-19 by using graphene as the channel to adsorb ethyl butyrate with biomarker properties, and utilizing the adsorption effect as a sensing parameter. Graphene functionalized with platinum enhances the attraction between the biomarker and host material, confirmed through calculated chemical adsorption energy. Density Functional Theory was used to calculate the electronic and surface properties of the channel, with and without biomarker adsorption, and COMSOL Multiphysics was used to analyze the device's transport properties. Results show that biomarker adsorption on functionalized graphene alters the dynamics of charge carriers and subsequently changes the device's transport properties, making it suitable for COVID-19 detection.

Long period grating in double cladding fiber coated with graphene oxide as high-performance optical platform for biosensing

Flavio Esposito et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel fiber-optic biosensor was developed and tested for label-free detection of C-reactive protein in serum. The device showed enhanced sensitivity and visibility of grating resonances by tuning the working point to the mode transition region through etching of the outer fiber cladding. Coating the fiber transducer with graphene oxide enabled covalent immobilization of the biological recognition element, resulting in a low detection limit and a wide working range of clinical relevance.

Plasmonic Biosensor for Low-Index Liquid Analyte Detection Using Graphene-Assisted Photonic Crystal Fiber

Yashar Esfahani Monfared et al.

Summary: Our study presents a sensitive D-shaped photonic crystal fiber-based surface plasmon resonance sensor with linear sensing performance and a broad detection range for low refractive index liquid analytes. By examining different material combinations and proposing two distinct ways of analyte sensing, we have demonstrated that graphene-assisted PCF provides the best overall performance. The sensor shows improved sensitivity and figure of merit, as well as practical benefits such as protection from surface oxidation, making it a promising candidate for biosensing applications.

Gain-assisted critical coupling for enhanced optical absorption in graphene

Tingting Liu et al.

Summary: This work presents a gain-assisted method to achieve critical coupling and demonstrate maximum absorption in undoped monolayer graphene in the near-infrared. By introducing a gain medium, the dissipative rate is adjusted to match the radiation rate for achieving critical coupling, without changing the original structural geometry. The appropriate tuning of the gain coefficient also enables critical coupling absorption within a wide wavelength regime for different coupling configurations.
