Chiral Control of Carbon Dots via Surface Modification for Tuning the Enzymatic Activity of Glucose Oxidase

Mengling Zhang et al.

Summary: Chiral carbon dots (CDs) were obtained by thermal polymerization of chiral amino acids and citric acid, with the handedness of chirality controlled by adjusting the reaction temperature, leading to different kinds of surface modifications. Aliphatic amino acids resulted in CDs with the same handedness at different temperatures, while aromatic amino acids produced CDs with maintained or inversed handedness based on the temperature adjustment.

Photoluminescent chiral carbon dots derived from glutamine

Wenyan Ma et al.

Summary: This study presents a hydrothermal method to fabricate chiral CDs using amino acid enantiomers as precursors, resulting in CDs with excitation-dependent blue fluorescence and opposite optical rotation in solutions modulated by concentrations of CDs. Time-dependent density functional calculation suggests the presence of polypeptides on the surface of CDs, contributing to the optical activity originating from the stacking of neighboring carbonyl groups.
