International trends in screen-based behaviours from 2012 to 2019

Danielle L. Harvey et al.

Summary: The study characterized contemporary patterns of screen-based behaviors and their temporal trends, finding that daily screen time increased internationally from around 9 hours in 2012 to 11 hours in 2019, with notable increases in mobile phone use, online TV viewing, and games console use. Regional and demographic differences were observed in the duration of time spent on screen-based behaviors, with Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and younger age groups showing greater increases in overall screen time.

High-dose electronic media use in five-year-olds and its association with their psychosocial symptoms: a cohort study

Janette Niiranen et al.

Summary: The study found that 95% of preschool children exceeded the daily recommended use of e-media set by health professionals. Increased screen time at age 5 was associated with a risk of multiple psychosocial symptoms, while increased e-media use at 18 months was only associated with peer problems. Additionally, high-dose use of electronic games at age 5 seemed to have fewer risks for psychosocial well-being than programme viewing.

Summary: Emerging research indicates a significant increase in the global prevalence of clinically elevated depression and anxiety symptoms among children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prevalence rates were higher in studies conducted later in the pandemic and among girls, with older children exhibiting higher rates of depression symptoms.

Infant screen media usage and social-emotional functioning

Ming Wai Wan et al.

Summary: There is limited research on the impact of screen media usage on social-emotional development in children under two years old. A study found that infants with possible social-emotional delays spent more time on screens compared to those at low risk. Screen time was found to affect social-emotional competence and problems, with reduced parent-infant play partially mediating the effect on competence.

Socioeconomic status and child psychopathology in the United States: A meta-analysis of population-based studies

Matthew Peverill et al.

Summary: Children raised in families with low socioeconomic status are more likely to exhibit symptoms of psychopathology, with factors such as low family income, education level, and receipt of public assistance showing small to moderate associations with higher levels of childhood psychopathology. However, the strength of this association and the specific indices of SES most strongly associated with childhood psychopathology can vary across different populations and communities, highlighting the need for further research on potential intervention targets.
