Engineering Electronic Band Structure of Binary Thermoelectric Nanocatalysts for Augmented Pyrocatalytic Tumor Nanotherapy

Yachao Wang et al.

Summary: The development of high-performance pyroelectric nanocatalyst, Bi13S18I2 nanorods, has shown promising results for augmented pyrocatalytic tumor nanotherapy. By utilizing pyroelectric conversion and photothermal conversion, these nanorods can effectively deplete heat-shock proteins in tumor cells, enhancing therapeutic efficacy of photothermal tumor hyperthermia. Synergizing pyroelectric dynamic therapy with PTT has led to significant tumor suppression with a tumor inhibition rate of 97.2%, showing great potential for therapeutic applications in biocatalytic nanomedicine.

Antibody-drug conjugates: Smart chemotherapy delivery across tumor histologies

Paolo Tarantino et al.

Summary: Recent years have seen a shift in cancer treatment towards therapies tailored to specific molecular aberrations and immunologic markers, rather than solely relying on histology. Several histology-agnostic therapies are now adopted in clinical practice for treating patients, and novel antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have shown promise in treating solid tumors. The multihistological expansion of ADCs poses both challenges and opportunities for cancer treatment.

Summary: Bladder cancer is the tenth most common cancer type worldwide, with urothelial carcinoma being the most prevalent subtype. Enfortumab vedotin, a novel antibody-drug conjugate targeting Nectin-4, has shown promising results in clinical trials for locally advanced and metastatic urothelial carcinoma. Further research on the combination of enfortumab vedotin with immunotherapy and other agents is eagerly awaited to provide more effective treatments for bladder cancer.

Summary: This study successfully designed a multifunctional platform of HA-modified gold nanorods/mesoporous silica-based nanoparticles loaded with DOX for photoacoustic imaging-guided cooperative chemophotothermal therapy for oral squamous cell carcinoma. The nanocomposite showed favorable biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, ideal drug loading capability, and strong photoacoustic imaging signals, and demonstrated better therapeutic effects than chemotherapy alone or photothermal therapy.

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts as Players in Cancer Development and Progression and Their Role in Targeted Radionuclide Imaging and Therapy

Sofia Koustoulidou et al.

Summary: Cancer Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs) are a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment with complex origins and diverse functions, making them an appealing target for novel therapeutic interventions in cancer. Despite some limitations in translating CAF-targeting interventions from research to clinical use, promising developments have been made, particularly in targeting Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) on CAFs for improved cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Radionuclide-Based Imaging of Breast Cancer: State of the Art

Huiling Li et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is a common malignant tumor that affects women globally, posing a significant threat to their health. Early detection of breast cancer can greatly improve patient prognosis and survival rates, with radionuclide molecular imaging techniques offering advantages in functional detection. Using radionuclide-labeled compounds for noninvasive visualization of biological processes helps elucidate the metabolic state of breast cancer, while receptor-targeted radionuclide molecular imaging is sensitive and specific for visualizing overexpressed molecular markers in the disease, aiding in early diagnosis and improved patient care. Rapid developments in radionuclide probes are contributing to the diagnosis of breast cancer across various aspects, with promising tools being developed for early detection.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer: A Mountain Yet to Be Scaled Despite the Triumphs

Qitong Wu et al.

Summary: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer that cannot be treated with endocrine therapy and Her2-targeted therapy, accounting for 40% of breast cancer-related mortality. Chemoresistance, metastasis, and tumor relapse are major challenges in TNBC, with mechanisms still somewhat ambiguous. TNBC has lower survival rates compared to other breast cancer subtypes, primarily due to chemoresistance and selection of chemoresistant cells leading to distant metastasis and tumor relapse.
