Molybdenum phosphide coupled with highly dispersed nickel confined in porous carbon nanofibers for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Shuaiqi Gong et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic CO2 reduction using renewable solar energy is a promising strategy for managing global carbon balance. However, the process of oriented photogenerated electron delivery is challenging. In this study, we developed a method to construct porous nitrogen-doped carbon nano-fibers loaded with highly dispersed nickel and molybdenum phosphide nanoparticles for efficient CO2 reduction. The porous carbon nanofibers improved charge/mass transfer and CO2 adsorption, while the highly dispersed nickel species stabilized by coordinating Ni-N bonds with N from the carbon nanofibers adjusted the material's band structure and altered the transfer route of the photogenerated carriers. The resulting Ni-MoP@NCPF exhibited high CO product selectivity and rate under visible light irradiation, outperforming the Ni-free MoP@NCPF. These findings provide new insights into cost-effective transition metal compounds for photocatalytic CO2 reduction through morphology, composition, and heterointerface engineering.

Visible light-driven, selective CO2 reduction in water by In-doped Mo2C based on defect engineering

Shuaiqi Gong et al.

Summary: This study presents a highly efficient and selective photocatalyst, In@Mo2C-d, for CO2 reduction. The photocatalyst is prepared through an ion exchange and carbothermal reduction process, resulting in a self-core-shell nanoflower structure with defects. The experimental results show that the photocatalyst achieves 97.3% selectivity and a reaction rate of 234.4 mu mol g-1 h-1 for the visible light-driven CO2-to-CO reduction in aqueous media. Extensive physicochemical measurements reveal the photocatalytic mechanism, electron localization at nearby Mo sites, and the effect of doping and defects on the catalytic activity.

CO2-emission-free electrocatalytic CH3OH selective upgrading with high productivity at large current densities for energy saved hydrogen co-generation

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: The defects-rich Ni3S2-CNFs nanoheterostructures exhibit robust electrocatalytic performance for selectively catalyzing methanol to formate with high productivity and no CO2 emission, achieving large current density (>700 mA cm(-2)) with high faradaic efficiency (>90%). The synergistic effect of in situ formed Ni-OOH and SOx species effectively modulate the d band center of Ni3S2, acting as unique collaborative active sites for the thermodynamically favorable conversion from methanol to formate and suppressing the further oxidation to CO2, resulting in high activity and selectivity of CO2-emission-free methanol upgrading reaction.
