Multi-task temporal convolutional networks for joint recognition of surgical phases and steps in gastric bypass procedures

Summary: This study introduces a multi-task multi-stage temporal convolutional network for jointly recognizing phases and steps of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery from videos, outperforming single-task methods in both accuracy, precision, and recall. The proposed method demonstrates the benefits of jointly modeling phases and steps for improving the overall recognition of each type of activity.
