Family-wide Characterization of Methylated DNA Binding Ability of Arabidopsis MBDs

Zhibin Wu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the DNA binding ability of MBDs in Arabidopsis thaliana and finds that only AtMBD6 and AtMBD7 can bind to methylated DNA. Structural analysis reveals the reasons for the weaker binding of AtMBD5 MBD and other AtMBDs to methylated DNA.

Coordinated Epigenetic Regulation in Plants: A Potent Managerial Tool to Conquer Biotic Stress

Chien-Yu Huang et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved phenotypic plasticity to combat pathogens and pests through epigenetic regulation. This regulation involves changes in DNA methylation, histone modification, and chromatin structures, which may be inherited by future generations. Understanding the mechanisms of epigenetic regulation is important for developing effective and eco-friendly strategies for crop protection.

Exploration of the Potential Transcriptional Regulatory Mechanisms of DNA Methyltransferases and MBD Genes in Petunia Anther Development and Multi-Stress Responses

Lisha Shi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the regulatory role of DNA methylation by C5-MTase and MBD genes in petunia anther maturation processes and multi-stress responses. The co-expression relationships between these genes mainly play a role in anthers and show little variation under different stress conditions. The study provides a framework for future functional characterization of C5-MTases and MBDs.

Plant immune networks

Bruno Pok Man Ngou et al.

Summary: Plants have cell-surface and intracellular receptors to recognize pathogen effectors. These receptors, along with their coreceptors, form networks to mediate downstream immune responses. The cell-surface and intracellular immune systems are interdependent and function synergistically to provide robust resistance against pathogens.

Overexpression of a methyl-CpG-binding protein gene OsMBD707 leads to larger tiller angles and reduced photoperiod sensitivity in rice

Mengyu Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, the expression patterns of OsMBD family genes in rice were explored, and 13 OsMBDs with active expression in various rice tissues were identified. The function of a rice class I MBD protein OsMBD707 was characterized, showing that OsMBD707 is constitutively expressed and localized in the nucleus. Transgenic rice overexpressing OsMBD707 exhibited larger tiller angles and altered photoperiod sensitivity, leading to delayed flowering under short day conditions and early flowering under long day conditions. RNA-seq analysis revealed that overexpression of OsMBD707 resulted in reduced photoperiod sensitivity in rice and changes in the expression of flowering regulator genes in the Ehd1-Hd3a/RFT1 pathway.

PTI-ETI crosstalk: an integrative view of plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: Plants have innate immune responses to resist pathogen attacks, involving pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs) that lead to pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI). Despite different activation mechanisms, PTI and ETI converge into similar downstream responses, with evidence of interactions and shared components between PRR-mediated and NLR-mediated signaling cascades. Future research on signal collaboration between PRR-initiated and NLR-initiated immunity will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the plant immune system.

MBD5 and MBD6 couple DNA methylation to gene silencing through the J-domain protein SILENZIO

Lucia Ichino et al.

Summary: The study identified two Arabidopsis thaliana methyl-CpG-binding domain proteins, MBD5 and MBD6, which are recruited to chromatin by recognition of CG methylation and redundantly repress a subset of genes and transposons without affecting DNA methylation levels. These methyl readers recruit a J-domain protein, SILENZIO, which functions as a transcriptional repressor downstream of DNA methylation. The conserved J-domain motif of SILENZIO is required for its interaction with HSP70s and its silencing function.

Convergent Epigenetic Mechanisms Avoid Constitutive Expression of Immune Receptor Gene Subsets

Damian Alejandro Cambiagno et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the expression of PRR and NLR immune receptors genes in plants is controlled by complex mechanisms, involving epigenetic marks that can be activated in mutants to enhance resistance. The repression of initial gene expression can be achieved through specific epigenetic marks, which may be activated in mutants to prime immune responses and improve resistance.
