Genome-wide analysis of wall associated kinase (WAK) gene family in barley

Rajiv K. Tripathi et al.

Summary: In this study, 91 WAK genes were identified and classified into five groups in barley. An evolutionary analysis revealed species-specific expansion of HvWAKs compared to AtWAKs. Further analysis indicated HvWAK1 may be regulated by the transcription factor HvSPL23.

Recent insights into the metabolic adaptations of phosphorus-deprived plants

D. M. S. B. Dissanayaka et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved adaptive metabolic processes in response to phosphorus deficiency, enhancing their efficiency in phosphorus acquisition and utilization through changes in gene expression, post-transcriptional, and post-translational mechanisms. These responses include up-regulation of high-affinity phosphorus transporters and scavenging enzymes, membrane remodeling, and flexibility in plant metabolism and bioenergetics. These advances are leading to the development of innovative strategies for engineering phosphorus-efficient crops to ensure long-term food security and ecosystem preservation.

Potassium and phosphorus transport and signaling in plants

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are essential macronutrients for plant growth, with their availability affecting crop yield. Improving plant nutrient utilization efficiency is key to overcoming limitations caused by potassium and phosphorus deficiencies. Investigation of molecular mechanisms in plant sensing, absorbing, transporting, and using potassium and phosphorus is crucial for enhancing crop nutrient utilization efficiency.

Mobilisation of Al, Fe, and DOM from topsoil during simulated early Podzol development and subsequent DOM adsorption on model minerals

Agnes Krettek et al.

Summary: Podzols are characterized by the mobilization of metals and DOM in topsoil horizons, and immobilization in subsoil horizons. Studies show that flow velocity and interruptions affect element release, with DOM composition impacting its adsorption on minerals differently. The intensity of soil percolation during early podzolization affects both quantitative and qualitative element release, as well as the retention of adsorptive DOM in subsoil horizons.

A plasma membrane transporter coordinates phosphate reallocation and grain filling in cereals

Bin Ma et al.

Summary: The plasma membrane transporter OsPHO1;2 plays a crucial role in coordinating phosphate reallocation for starch biosynthesis during grain filling in cereal crops. Its mutation leads to excessive accumulation of Pi in developing seeds, inhibiting AGPase activity, and ultimately affecting grain filling. However, overexpression of AGPase can alleviate this defect. The maize transporter ZmPHO1;2 also functions similarly.

Phosphorus adsorption characteristics in forested and managed podzolic soils

Amana Jemal Kedir et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the phosphorus adsorption characteristics of Podzols soils in forested and managed fields in eastern and central Newfoundland, Canada. Results showed that the organic LFH and long-term managed Ap horizons had the highest P retention capacities, while newly converted soils or soils used as tree nurseries had lower P adsorption capacities.

How biochar works, and when it doesn't: A review of mechanisms controlling soil and plant responses to biochar

Stephen Joseph et al.

Summary: Biochar properties and effects largely depend on feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. Studies found that biochars can increase P availability, decrease heavy metal concentrations in plant tissues, and reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. Adding biochar can significantly increase crop yields, especially in P-sorbing acidic soils and sandy soils in drylands.
