Higher habitual dietary flavonoid intake associates with lower central blood pressure and arterial stiffness in healthy older adults

Benjamin H. Parmenter et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing intake of anthocyanins and flavanones is associated with lower central diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, and augmentation index. These associations remained significant even after adjusting for dietary quality and other major nutrients, indicating potential benefits of dietary anthocyanin and flavanone intake on central hemodynamics and arterial stiffness.

Three AP2/ERF family members modulate flavonoid synthesis by regulating type IV chalcone isomerase in citrus

Chenning Zhao et al.

Summary: CitCHIL1 enhances the accumulation of citrus flavanones and flavones by assisting the cyclization of naringenin chalcone. The transcription factors CitERF32, CitERF33, and CitRAV1 positively regulate the expression of CitCHIL1, forming a complex that enhances flavonoid production. This study provides insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying efficient flavonoid biosynthesis.

Application of the Database of Flavonoid Values for USDA Food Codes 2007-2010 in assessing intake differences between the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) study and What We Eat in America (WWEIA), NHANES

Rhonda S. Sebastian et al.

Summary: This study compared flavonoid intakes between different populations and found that anthocyanidins were lower in the HANDLS study, with lower total flavonoids and other flavonoid classes in subpopulations such as men and those with poverty status <125%. This suggests that lower flavonoid intake may contribute to the high prevalence of diet-related diseases in populations represented by HANDLS.

Fisetin: An anticancer perspective

Muhammad Imran et al.

Summary: Fisetin, a dietary agent found in fruits and vegetables, has shown promising anticancer activity by inhibiting cancer cell stages, preventing progression in cell cycle and growth, and inducing apoptosis. Fisetin also modulates the expressions of various proteins in cancer cell lines and suppresses several signaling pathways involved in cancer development.

Identification and Characterization of Chalcone Isomerase Genes Involved in Flavonoid Production in Dracaena cambodiana

Jiahong Zhu et al.

Summary: Dragon’s blood is a traditional medicine rich in flavonoids, and this study identified and classified 11 CHI family genes in Dracaena cambodiana, an important source plant of dragon’s blood. DcCHI1 and DcCHI4 were found to be involved in flavonoid production, with DcCHI1 catalyzing the formation of naringenin and DcCHI4 lacking this activity. Overexpression of DcCHI1 or DcCHI4 increased flavonoid production in both D. cambodiana and tobacco, indicating their important roles in flavonoid biosynthesis.

The Hallmarks of Flavonoids in Cancer

Luis Gustavo Saboia Ponte et al.

Summary: Flavonoids, important bioactive compounds derived from plant-based foods and beverages, have known biological activities including modulation of inflammation and inhibition of cell proliferation, making them important adjuvants in the treatment of various diseases. Understanding molecular signaling pathways and mechanisms of action of flavonoids in cancer therapy is crucial for prevention and progression of the disease. The current literature provides evidence supporting that flavonoids may play a significant role in cancer therapy, emphasizing the importance of healthy diets for disease prevention.

Systematically Engineered Fatty Acid Catabolite Pathway for the Production of (2S)-Naringenin in Saccharomyces cerevisiaeI

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully increased the production of (2S)-naringenin by regulating the fatty acid beta-oxidation pathway and gene expression in yeast, leading to higher levels of acetyl-CoA in the cytosol. Fed-batch fermentation achieved remarkable levels of (2S)-naringenin production, with the highest reported titer in any microorganism.

Elusive partners: a review of the auxiliary proteins guiding metabolic flux in flavonoid biosynthesis

Mehran Dastmalchi

Summary: Flavonoids are specialized metabolites widely distributed in the plant kingdom, playing essential roles in plant growth and survival. CHIL and PR10 proteins, as auxiliary components in flavonoid biosynthesis, have been found to be crucial in regulating plant productivity, pigmentation, and specific metabolic pathways. Targeting these overlooked auxiliary proteins may be key in manipulating plants or engineering microbial systems for natural product synthesis.
