Inheritance of resistance against northern leaf blight of maize using conventional breeding methods

Nader R. Abdelsalam et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the resistance of various maize parents and hybrids to the northern corn leaf blight disease using classical genetic approaches. The results showed significant variations in resistance among different maize parents and hybrids. The crossing between high resistant maize cultivars resulted in high levels of resistance to the disease. Therefore, classical breeding is important for increasing the resistance levels of maize germplasm.

Crop damage, economic losses, and the economic damage threshold for northern corn leaf blight

F. A. Guerra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crop damage and economic losses caused by Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) and proposes economic damage thresholds (EDTs) for managing the disease. The findings indicate a negative correlation between NCLB severity and yield, and provide insights into optimizing fungicide use and reducing costs for disease control.

Novel 4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole derivatives as potential succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors: design, synthesis, crystal structure, biological activity and molecular modeling

Tingting Zhang et al.

Summary: Twenty-eight new 4, 5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activities, with compounds 3a and 3f showing excellent efficacy against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. These compounds also exhibited better inhibitory activity against succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) compared to the commercial fungicide penthiopyrad. Molecular modeling suggested that compound 3f had a stronger binding affinity to SDH than penthiopyrad.

The anti-parasite action of imidazole derivatives likely involves oxidative stress but not HIF-1 alpha signaling

Oluyomi Stephen Adeyemi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that imidazole compounds restrict parasite growth by causing oxidative stress, making them a potential anti-parasite therapy. This finding not only emphasizes the anti-parasite prospects of imidazoles but also implicates the host L-tryptophan pathway as a feasible treatment option for T. gondii infections.

Tales Souza Silva et al.

Summary: A new fungicide formulation, AZXFLT, was evaluated for the control of fungal leaf spots in corn crops in Brazil, showing positive effects in reducing disease progress and increasing crop productivity and economic viability. The combination of protective fungicides with AZXFLT, especially at a dose of 75 + 75 g a.i. ha(-1) applied twice, contributed to the highest efficacy in disease control and economic returns.

A teosinte-derived allele of a MYB transcription repressor confers multiple disease resistance in maize

Hongze Wang et al.

Summary: This study cloned a teosinte-derived allele of a resistance gene, ZmMM1, in maize, which confers resistance to multiple diseases and acts as a transcription repressor. The mechanism involves polymorphisms in the 3' untranslated region of ZmMM1 leading to increased protein accumulation, ultimately regulating specific target genes involved in plant immunity and cell death. The successful isolation of the ZmMM1 resistance gene provides insights for developing broad-spectrum disease resistance and understanding molecular mechanisms underlying multiple disease resistance.
