Patterns of eukaryotic diversity from the surface to the deep-ocean sediment

Tristan Cordier et al.

Summary: Remote deep-ocean sediment ecosystems have high biodiversity, with benthic communities being three times more diverse than pelagic realms. These communities are influenced by ocean basins and particulate organic carbon flux from the upper ocean. The presence of plankton DNA in the DOS predicts variations in surface POC export and reveals previously overlooked taxa that may play a role in the biological carbon pump.

Seasonal microbial food web dynamics in contrasting Southern Ocean productivity regimes

Urania Christaki et al.

Summary: Spatial and seasonal dynamics of microbial loop fluxes were investigated in the Southern Ocean in the Indian sector, revealing higher microbial biomasses and fluxes in the iron-fertilized surface waters compared to surrounding off-plateau waters. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates were identified as the main loss process of bacterial production, with viral-induced mortality being low. In late summer, primary production was more efficiently transferred to bacterial biomass and HNF, providing a food source for higher trophic levels.

Annual phytoplankton dynamics in coastal waters from Fildes Bay, Western Antarctic Peninsula

Nicole Trefault et al.

Summary: The analysis of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters of the West Antarctic Peninsula using metabarcoding revealed different community structures based on the approach used, with different dominant groups in different seasons and size fractions. The discovery of a potentially new clade specific to the Antarctic Micromonas highlights the importance of year-round monitoring and complementary strategies for a comprehensive understanding of phytoplankton dynamics in Antarctic coastal waters.

Future Risk for Southern Ocean Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change

Rachel D. Cavanagh et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean plays a vital role in supporting global ecosystem services, with climate change and human activities impacting both the demand for and provision of these services. Assessments have been made on existing status and future climate-driven changes in Southern Ocean ecosystems, particularly focusing on key services such as 'blue carbon', the Antarctic krill fishery, and Antarctic tourism. Policy frameworks and potential management responses are crucial to addressing risks posed by these changes in a changing climate.

Environmental DNA metabarcoding for monitoring metazoan biodiversity in Antarctic nearshore ecosystems

Laurence J. Clarke et al.

Summary: The study found that eDNA from water and sediment core samples are complementary sample types, with epifauna more likely to be detected in water column samples and infauna in sediment. More reference DNA sequences are needed for infauna/meiofauna to increase the proportion of sequences and number of taxa that can be identified. Developing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial dynamics of eDNA at low temperatures would aid interpretation of eDNA signals from polar environments.

Low diversity of a key phytoplankton group along the West Antarctic Peninsula

Michael S. Brown et al.

Summary: The West Antarctic Peninsula is experiencing rapid warming and melting, impacting the regional marine food web. This study focused on cryptophyte diversity along the Peninsula, revealing two major taxa dominating the community. Changes in oceanographic conditions were associated with shifts in cryptophyte community composition.

Decline in plankton diversity and carbon flux with reduced sea ice extent along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Yajuan Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates how interannual variability in sea-ice conditions impacts biodiversity and biological carbon fluxes in the Western Antarctic Peninsula using a 5-year DNA metabarcoding dataset. The results indicate that sea-ice extent is a dominant factor influencing eukaryotic plankton community composition, biodiversity, and net community production, with species richness and evenness decreasing with an increase in sea surface temperature. The study concludes that eukaryotic plankton diversity and carbon cycling in the Western Antarctic Peninsula are strongly linked to sea-ice conditions.

Orbital- and millennial-scale Antarctic Circumpolar Current variability in Drake Passage over the past 140,000 years

Shuzhuang Wu et al.

Summary: Research has shown significant changes in the speed of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) during glacial and interglacial periods, with a stronger circulation in the Antarctic during glacials. Additionally, the ACC is closely linked to millennial-scale climate oscillations in the Southern Hemisphere, amplified through changes in Antarctic sea ice extent.
