Microbes trading electricity in consortia of environmental and biotechnological significance

Amelia-Elena Rotaru et al.

Summary: Favorable interspecies associations are prevalent in natural microbial assemblages, with some being cometabolic dependent partnerships involving exchange of extracellular electrons between species. Recent research has focused on DIET and CIET interspecies associations in artificial co-cultures and consortia, emphasizing approaches to validate these relationships.

Multi-Criteria Evaluation and Sensitivity Analysis for the Optimal Location of Constructed Wetlands (METland) at Oceanic and Mediterranean Areas

Lorena Penacoba-Antona et al.

Summary: METland is a new type of wetland system for wastewater treatment using a biocompatible electroconductive material to stimulate electroactive bacteria metabolism, showing high pollutant removal rates and a small land footprint. A methodology based on GIS and MCE techniques was proposed to predict optimal locations and optimize resources using Sobol method. The study revealed key influential factors and best suitable locations, aiding in implementing nature-based wastewater treatment solutions in rural areas.

Assessing METland Design and Performance Through LCA: Techno-Environmental Study With Multifunctional Unit Perspective

Lorena Penacoba-Antona et al.

Summary: The study evaluated two operation modes of a full-scale METland in wastewater treatment, with the aerobic mode showing the highest removal rates for organic pollutants and nitrogen, and being the most environmentally friendly design. METland demonstrated higher efficiency in wastewater treatment compared to constructed wetland, with an increased capacity per surface area without external energy use.
