Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Measures on Detections of Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Children During the 2020 Australian Winter

Daniel K. Yeoh et al.

Summary: Public health measures aimed at COVID-19 have led to significant reductions in respiratory syncytial virus and influenza detections among children in Western Australia during winter 2020, despite schools reopening. Border closures are likely playing a key role in limiting external introductions of respiratory viruses.

Human and novel coronavirus infections in children: a review

Nipunie Rajapakse et al.

Summary: Coronaviruses cause a spectrum of symptoms from mild infection to severe illness and death, with children commonly infected by four human coronaviruses leading to mild upper respiratory tract infections. The novel coronaviruses pose a higher risk to older adults and those with underlying conditions, while children tend to be asymptomatic or experience mild symptoms typically.

The europe second wave of COVID-19 infection and the Italy strange situation

E. Bontempi

Summary: The COVID-19 infection appeared in Italy in February 2020 and spread rapidly across Europe. Despite theories of pollution-to-human transmission, the lower infection cases in Italy compared to other European countries can be attributed to more effective policies in limiting virus spread. It is crucial to consider imposed restrictions and public compliance to effectively combat the pandemic.

Increased risk of rhinovirus infection in children during the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic

Emi Takashita et al.

Summary: The study analyzed clinical specimens collected from 2244 patients with respiratory diseases in Japan between January 2018 and September 2020. The frequency of influenza and other respiratory viruses decreased significantly among all patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, except for an increase in rhinovirus infections in children under 10 years old. This suggests an increased risk of rhinovirus infection in children during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlights the importance of monitoring rhinovirus infections for potential interference with SARS-CoV-2.

Significant impact of nationwide SARS-CoV-2 lockdown measures on the circulation of other respiratory virus infections in Austria

Monika Redlberger-Fritz et al.

Summary: The study found that the implementation of lockdown measures in Austria led to a significant reduction in cumulative cases of different respiratory virus infections, especially for seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and human metapneumovirus, resulting in the end of annual epidemics. However, a re-increase of rhinovirus infections was observed after the lockdown measures were relaxed.

Human Rhinovirus Infection Blocks Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Replication Within the Respiratory Epithelium: Implications for COVID-19 Epidemiology

Summary: Research suggests that human rhinovirus triggers an interferon response that blocks SARS-CoV-2 replication, thus reducing the number of coronavirus disease 2019 cases. This virus-virus interaction can have population-wide effects.

Absence of detection of RSV and influenza during the COVID-19 pandemic in a Brazilian cohort: Likely role of lower transmission in the community

Fernanda Hammes Varela et al.

Summary: RSV and influenza are prevalent seasonal community viruses, and this study aimed to report the detection of these viruses during the period of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that while SARS-CoV-2 was positive in 32.7% of participants, influenza and RSV were not detected at all. This suggests that measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission may have had a significant impact on the spread of other respiratory pathogens.
