Disease Progression Modeling for Economic Evaluation in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease-A Systematic Review

Lina Gruneau et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review investigates the modeling of the natural history of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Differences were seen in model structure and data input among the included studies. Clear definitions of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and NAFLD were often lacking. Differences in disease progression modeling may have a large impact when assessing the value of emerging pharmacologic treatments.

Effect of diabetes medications and glycemic control on risk of hepatocellular cancer in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Jennifer R. Kramer et al.

Summary: Patients with NAFLD and diabetes have a high risk of developing HCC. The study found that the use of metformin was associated with a reduced risk of developing HCC, while combination therapy was associated with an increased risk. Glycemic control can be a useful biomarker for stratifying HCC risk in these patients.

Cadmium accelerates bacterial oleic acid production to promote fat accumulation in Caenorhabditis elegans

Xueqi Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to cadmium induces fat accumulation in nematodes, a process mediated by live bacteria. Cadmium perturbs metabolites in bacteria, notably oleic acid, leading to increased fat deposition in nematodes regardless of the cultivated system. Additionally, Vitamin D3 showed significant potential in preventing cadmium- or oleic acid-induced fat storage.

Gut microbiota exaggerates triclosan-induced liver injury via gut-liver axis

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that TCS can cause liver injury by disturbing lipid metabolism and dysbiosis of gut microbiota. TCS also increases intestinal permeability, contributing to liver damage. The research provides new insights into the health impact of TCS on the human body.

Overlooked subclinical portal hypertension in non-cirrhotic NAFLD: Is it real and how to measure it?

Gyorgy Baffy et al.

Summary: There have been clinical and experimental advances in detecting, measuring, and understanding subclinical portal hypertension in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The current understanding of the disease may need to be revisited, and new methods of measurement and a better understanding of the impact of subclinical portal hypertension on disease outcomes are needed.

Asian perspective on NAFLD-associated HCC

Terry Cheuk-Fung Yip et al.

Summary: Recent data shows that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a significant public health issue in Asia, with a population prevalence of 34%. The rising trend of NAFLD also leads to an increase in NAFLD-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review focuses on the changing epidemiology of HCC in Asia over the past 30 years, highlighting the importance of traditional risk factors and specific genetic polymorphism in East Asia. Additionally, non-obese individuals with NAFLD are commonly observed in Asia.

Insights into the Impact of Microbiota in the Treatment of NAFLD/NASH and Its Potential as a Biomarker for Prognosis and Diagnosis

Julio Plaza-Diaz et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is linked to obesity and metabolic disorders, leading to the more severe non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which increases the risks of cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver steatosis is associated with certain markers, but imaging methods are inaccurate, while changes in gut microbiota are related to NAFLD/NASH.

Si-Wu-Tang ameliorates fibrotic liver injury via modulating intestinal microbiota and bile acid homeostasis

Xiaoyong Xue et al.

Summary: Si-Wu-Tang (SWT) showed significant therapeutic effects against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis, improving collagen accumulation in the liver, intestinal barrier injury, and hepatic and intestinal inflammatory responses. By restructuring gut microbiota, influencing bile acid homeostasis, and activating the FXR pathways, SWT effectively protected against fibrotic liver injury induced by CCl4.

Gut Microbiota, Glucose, Lipid, and Water-Electrolyte Metabolism in Children With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Xiongfeng Pan et al.

Summary: This case-control study aimed to investigate the role of gut microbiota, especially butyrate-producing bacteria, in children with NAFLD. The results showed that children with NAFLD had dysbiosis in glucose, lipid, and water-electrolyte metabolism, with decreased abundance of beneficial bacteria and increased harmful bacteria in their gut microbiome. This suggests that the gut microbiome composition plays a significant role in the development and severity of NAFLD in children.

Do Antibiotics Cause Obesity Through Long-term Alterations in the Gut Microbiome? A Review of Current Evidence

Natalia Vallianou et al.

Summary: The majority of animal studies and meta-analyses of human studies suggest a link between exposure to antibiotics, particularly early in life, and subsequent development of obesity due to alterations in the gut microbiota. Evidence in humans is inconclusive, necessitating well-designed, long-term longitudinal studies to examine this association further. Further large-scale, longer-term, longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials in humans are needed to evaluate the causal relationship between early exposure to antibiotics and the subsequent development of overweight/obesity, as well as to assess the potential therapeutic interventions for prevention and management of obesity.
