Evaluating the efficacy of extracted squalene from seed oil in the form of microemulsion for the treatment of COVID-19: A clinical study

Mahmoud Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: This study involving 30 COVID-19 patients investigated the effects of squalene microemulsion on patient outcomes. Results showed significant differences between the treatment group receiving squalene and the control group in terms of oxygen therapy need, fever duration, cough alleviation, and lung CT improvement within 7 days of admission. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore squalene as a potential treatment for COVID-19.

Potential Therapeutic Applications of Pulmonary Surfactant Lipids in the Host Defence Against Respiratory Viral Infections

Jianjian Ji et al.

Summary: Pulmonary surfactant, composed of 90% lipids and 10% proteins, reduces surface tension in the lungs, preventing alveolar collapse and reducing mechanical work during breathing. Surfactant lipids have shown potential for therapeutic applications in respiratory viral infections due to their anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.

Interferon-Independent Restriction of RNA Virus Entry and Replication by a Class of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns

Michael J. Ernandes et al.

Summary: DAMPs released from dying or damaged cells can induce an antiviral state in human epithelial cells by limiting viral replication through preventing viral entry. These DAMPs, such as oxPAPC, PGPC, and POVPC, act rapidly and independently of interferon responses, broadening our understanding of host defenses against RNA virus infections.

Short and Robust Anti-Infective Lipopeptides Engineered Based on the Minimal Antimicrobial Peptide KR12 of Human LL-37

Jayaram Lakshmaiah Narayana et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified the smallest anti-infective peptide C10-KR8d with robust antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities through engineering modification of human cathelicidin LL-37. It effectively reduced bacterial burden of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in vivo and prevented bacterial biofilm formation in a mouse model. Additionally, this designer peptide recruits cytokines to clear infection and shows potential in immune modulation.
