VTA dopamine neuron activity encodes social interaction and promotes reinforcement learning through social prediction error

Clement Solie et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers demonstrated that VTA DA neurons show heterogeneous responses during interactions with unfamiliar conspecifics. The activity of DA neurons encodes social prediction error and drives social reinforcement learning.

Social isolation and its impact on child and adolescent development: a systematic review

Isabelle Lina de Laia Almeida et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the effects of social isolation on children's and teenagers' development, finding a strong association between social isolation and anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. It also leads to higher levels of cortisol and worse cognitive development. Therefore, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental and physical health of children and adolescents need careful follow-up by health professionals.

Forced Social Isolation and Mental Health: A Study on 1,006 Italians Under COVID-19 Lockdown

Luca Pancani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the psychological repercussions of social isolation during the COVID-19 lockdown in Italy. The findings showed that longer isolation periods and inadequate physical space were associated with worse mental health outcomes. Offline social contacts helped buffer the negative effects of social isolation, but online contacts were also crucial in protecting mental health when offline contacts were limited.

Association of Youth Age at Exposure to Household Dysfunction With Outcomes in Early Adulthood

Signe Hald Andersen

Summary: The study found that exposure to negative experiences in early adolescence was more strongly associated with later adverse outcomes, suggesting policy interventions should target this group. Understanding age-specific associations is crucial information for policymakers prioritizing resources for disadvantaged children and youths.
