Unsupervised learning predicts human perception and misperception of gloss

Summary: This study suggests that human gloss perception may emerge in an unsupervised fashion from learning to model statistical structure. The representations generated by unsupervised learning networks on renderings of glossy surfaces can better predict human gloss perception and explain illusions in gloss perception.
