Cyp11a2 Is Essential for Oocyte Development and Spermatogonial Stem Cell Differentiation in Zebrafish

Yaqing Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the functional importance of cyp11a2 in early oogenesis and differentiation of SSCs in zebrafish. Depletion of cyp11a2 results in steroidogenic deficiencies, sex reversal, and infertility in males. The mutation leads to apoptosis of oocytes in developing ovaries and dysfunction of Sertoli cells and Leydig cells in developing testes.

Cyp17a1 is Required for Female Sex Determination and Male Fertility by Regulating Sex Steroid Biosynthesis in Fish

Lanying Yang et al.

Summary: In teleost fish, the gene Cyp17a1 plays a crucial role in steroidogenesis, sex determination, and fertility. Mutations in the cyp17a1 gene in Nile tilapia led to female-to-male sex reversal and deficiencies in hormone production, impacting both the sex determination and reproductive processes in fish. Overall, Cyp17a1 is found to be essential for E2 production in female sex determination and differentiation, as well as for T and 11-KT production in promoting spermatogenesis and fertility in male fish.

Rbm46, a novel germ cell-specific factor, modulates meiotic progression and spermatogenesis

Xiangyan Dai et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates the crucial role of Rbm46 in zebrafish reproduction, showing that disruption of Rbm46 leads to masculinization and infertility by impairing germ cell progression through meiosis prophase I. Rbm46 may be involved in posttranscriptional regulation of key genes essential for germ cell development during gametogenesis.

Insulin-like 3 affects zebrafish spermatogenic cells directly and via Sertoli cells

Diego Crespo et al.

Summary: Insl3, under the control of Fsh in the pituitary, regulates spermatogonia differentiation and apoptosis via the Pparg and retinoic acid pathways in zebrafish. The Insl3 receptors are expressed in A-type spermatogonia, Sertoli and myoid cells in zebrafish testes.
