New insights into interface interactions of CNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites

Ke Duan et al.

Summary: Through molecular dynamics simulation, it was found that there are two different types of interfaces, weak and strong, between carbon nanotubes and epoxy matrices. The load transfer capability at the weak interface is very low, while the strong pull-out interface exhibits higher strength. Additionally, the interfacial shear strength is influenced by the diameter of the carbon nanotubes, but not by their length.

Fabrication of water-resistant epoxy nanocomposite with improved dynamic mechanical properties and balanced thermal and dimensional stability: Study on dual role of graphene oxide nanosheets and barium oxide microparticles

Asha Bhanu A.V et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed a water-resistant epoxy nanocomposite by incorporating graphene oxide and barium oxide into the epoxy, reducing water diffusion while maintaining thermal and mechanical properties. The morphological studies revealed the presence of micro/nano-clusters of graphene oxide and barium oxide in the nanocomposites, enhancing hydrophobicity and creating a barrier to water diffusion. Dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed good viscoelastic performance and balanced thermal and dimensional stability of the epoxy nanocomposite.

Zinc-doped silica/polyaniline core/shell nanoparticles towards corrosion protection epoxy nanocomposite coatings

Seyyed Arash Haddadi et al.

Summary: Commercial paints and coatings are utilized to protect metallic substrates in corrosive environments, with nanostructures embedded in polymeric coatings for barrier and active protection. This research focused on the role of PANI as an active poly-electrolyte modifier for the surface modification of MSNs doped with Zn2+. Characterization techniques showed the formation of PANI shells on silica cores and the release of Zn2+ triggered by pH changes. The enhanced rheological, thermal, and mechanical characteristics of the PANI-coated nanoparticles in epoxy nanocomposite coatings demonstrated good dispersion and chemical interaction, leading to dual barrier/active protection properties.

Tao Sun et al.

Summary: A wet chemical method was proposed to synthesize sandwich-structured graphene oxide@poly(aminophenol-formaldehyde) sheets, which showed good dispersion stability and enhanced mechanical and thermal properties in epoxy composites. The introduction of GO@PAPF sheets improved tensile strength, impact strength, and thermal stability of the composites, attributed to the large interfacial area, strong interfacial force, and good dispersion of the sheets in the epoxy matrix.
