Evaluating the precariousness of coral recovery when coral and macroalgae are alternative basins of attraction

Russell J. Schmitt et al.

Summary: This study explores the dynamics between coral and macroalgae as alternative attractors in benthic communities, highlighting the crucial role of herbivores in controlling macroalgae and maintaining a coral-invadable state. Results from Moorea show that the abundance of grazing herbivores directly influences the bistability of coral and macroalgae states, providing insights into the long-term persistence and transition of reef communities.

How do fisher responses to macroalgal overgrowth influence the resilience of coral reefs?

Andrew Rassweiler et al.

Summary: Research indicates that fishing has a significant impact on coral reef ecosystems, especially the predation on herbivorous fish species may reduce the resilience of coral states and promote the growth of macroalgae. However, by adjusting fishing behaviors, it is possible to enhance the resilience of coral states and promote coral recovery. Therefore, humans as a dynamic part of the system play a crucial role in the restoration of coral ecosystems.

Hedonic evaluation of coral reef fish prices on a direct sale market

A. Nassiri et al.

Summary: This evaluation using the two-stage Rosen's model aims to deduce the implicit prices of coral-reef fish species commonly encountered in the road-side market in Moorea, French Polynesia during 2014-2015. The results show positive cross-species elasticities, indicating complementarity between reef species in bundles which enhances the value of catches. These findings demonstrate the importance of empirical economic analysis in understanding small-scale coral-reef fisheries in the Pacific.

On thin ice: Linking elevation and long-term losses of lake ice cover

Kyle R. Christianson et al.

Summary: The study found that the ice-cover duration of high-elevation lakes is decreasing, leading to an increase in open water duration. Compared to Northern Hemisphere lakes, the ice-cover duration in Green Lakes Valley, Colorado is decreasing faster, which is partly influenced by the elevation level.

COVID-19 pandemic impacts on conservation research, management, and public engagement in US national parks

Abraham J. Miller-Rushing et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted conservation research, management, and public engagement in protected areas, including US national parks. The changes in park operations and conditions have posed challenges for important science, management, and public engagement goals, but also created opportunities for more flexible monitoring programs and inclusive methods of public engagement. Strategic science, management planning, flexible operations, and online public engagement are needed to address rapid and unpredictable challenges in the future.

COVID-19 lockdowns show reduced pollution on snow and ice in the Indus River Basin

Edward Bair et al.

Summary: Melting snow and ice supply water for nearly 2 billion people, but pollution from light-absorbing particles can accelerate melt. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, air quality improved globally, leading to cleaner snow/ice surfaces in 2020. Reduction in light-absorbing particles can delay melt onset and mitigate climate change effects.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to changes in people's environmental beliefs and behavior, with threat appraisal and coping appraisal identified as motivators for pro-environmental actions. The study found that individuals are more willing to engage in environmentally friendly behaviors, such as recycling and reducing consumption, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Horticulture: Critical Issues and Opportunities Derived from an Unexpected Occurrence

Roberta Bulgari et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the global horticulture industry and people's habits, leading to changes in food and ornamental plant production chains, shortages of goods, lack of labor, and reduced demand for certain products. New approaches to food production and the reconnection between farmers and consumers are emerging, as well as a growing recognition of the importance of leisure activities related to plants and access to nature.
