Clinical presentation, disease course, and outcome of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients with and without pre-existing cardiac disease: a cohort study across 18 countries

M. Linschoten et al.

Summary: Patients with heart disease have a higher mortality rate when hospitalized with COVID-19, but there is considerable heterogeneity in the association between different heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Patients with heart failure are at greatest risk of death during hospitalization with COVID-19.

Competing-risk analysis of coronavirus disease 2019 in-hospital mortality in a Northern Italian centre from SMAtteo COvid19 REgistry (SMACORE)

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality and discharge in a cohort of Lombardy patients with COVID-19. The results showed that older age, male sex, number of comorbidities, and hospital admission after March 4th were independent risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality. These factors definitively predicted the clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Predicting mortality of individual patients with COVID-19: a multicentre Dutch cohort

Maarten C. Ottenhoff et al.

Summary: In this research, models were developed and validated to predict mortality of COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital. Two models were created based on admission features, showing better performance than age-based decision rules and potentially assisting decision-making during hospital bed shortages.
