Attribution of Observed Recent Decrease in Low Clouds Over the Northeastern Pacific to Cloud-Controlling Factors

Hendrik Andersen et al.

Summary: Marine low clouds play a role in cooling the Earth's climate, with their coverage controlled by environmental factors. A significant decrease in LCC in the northeastern Pacific over the past two decades is linked to a decrease in inversion strength and near-surface winds, as well as an increase in sea surface temperatures. The choice of predictors is found to be more important than the method in analyzing LCC trends.

Quantifying albedo susceptibility biases in shallow clouds

Graham Feingold et al.

Summary: The evaluation of radiative forcing associated with aerosol-cloud interactions is a significant source of uncertainty in future climate projections. Aerosol particles influence clouds locally, and averaging to larger spatial and temporal scales carries biases due to the heterogeneity and spatial correlation of the interacting fields and the nonlinearity of the responses. The study finds that spatial aggregation biases can be on the order of hundreds of percent, depending on the methodology. Key uncertainties arise from the adiabatic drop concentration retrieval, the correlation between aerosol and cloud fields, and the extent of averaging. Temporal aggregation biases offset spatial aggregation biases. These spatial and temporal biases have significant implications for observing aerosol indirect effects and inferring aerosol-cloud-radiation effects.

Factors affecting precipitation formation and precipitation susceptibility of marine stratocumulus with variable above- and below-cloud aerosol concentrations over the Southeast Atlantic

Siddhant Gupta et al.

Summary: Aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (ACIs) contribute to uncertainties in climate models. Observations from the ORACLES field campaign showed that contact between biomass burning aerosols and marine stratocumulus resulted in precipitation suppression and reduced precipitation susceptibility. Different aerosol concentrations also influenced cloud microphysical properties.

Albedo susceptibility of northeastern Pacific stratocumulus: the role of covarying meteorological conditions

Jianhao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the sensitivity of marine low clouds to aerosol perturbations using satellite observations. The results show that cloud state plays a dominant role in determining cloud albedo susceptibility, while meteorological factors have a smaller impact. The study also identifies clear brightening and darkening regimes based on cloud liquid water path and cloud droplet number concentration, consistent with previous research on aerosol-cloud interactions.

Assessment of COVID-19 effects on satellite-observed aerosol loading over China with machine learning

Hendrik Andersen et al.

Summary: This study used a machine learning model to estimate aerosol optical depth (AOD) during the lockdown in China, finding no clear decrease in AOD during this period. The comparison between model-expected and observed AOD indicated that meteorological influences actually increased AOD in some regions, highlighting the complexity of aerosol variability and the challenges of attribution.

Cloud drop number concentrations over the western North Atlantic Ocean: seasonal cycle, aerosol interrelationships, and other influential factors

Hossein Dadashazar et al.

Summary: Cloud drop number concentrations (N-d) over the western North Atlantic Ocean (WNAO) are highest in winter and lowest in summer, contrasting with peak aerosol proxy variables in spring and summer. Factors explaining the seasonal cycles include cold-air outbreak conditions and winds aligned with continental outflow. Machine learning models identified cloud fraction as the most important factor influencing N-d for winter and summer, with other factors such as CAO index and surface mass concentrations also playing a role.

The CLoud-Aerosol-Radiation Interaction and Forcing: Year 2017 (CLARIFY-2017) measurement campaign

Jim M. Haywood et al.

Summary: The representations of clouds, aerosols, and cloud-aerosol-radiation impacts are key uncertainties in climate change. The southeast Atlantic region is optimal for studying aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions, but existing satellite observations lack the necessary resolution for detailed assessment. The CLARIFY-2017 program aims to improve model estimates, cloud properties, satellite retrievals, and the impacts of aerosols in weather and climate models.

Meteorology-driven variability of air pollution (PM1) revealed with explainable machine learning

Roland Stirnberg et al.

Summary: This study uses a data-driven approach to investigate the meteorology-driven component of PM1 variability, finding that winter pollution is influenced by shallow mixed layer heights, low temperatures, low wind speeds, or inflow from northeastern wind directions, while summer pollution is driven by high temperatures, dry spells, and low wind speeds.
