Evaluation of the ERA5 reanalysis-based Universal Thermal Climate Index on mortality data in Europe

Ales Urban et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) based on ERA5 as a health-related tool, analyzing the relationship between thermal conditions and mortality in 21 European cities. The findings suggest that ERA5-based UTCI may be a useful tool for defining life-threatening thermal conditions, especially in locations where high-quality station data are not available.

Introducing NARCliM1.5: Evaluating the Performance of Regional Climate Projections for Southeast Australia for 1950-2100

Nidhi Nishant et al.

Summary: The NARCliM project has contributed to the CORDEX initiative for Australasia by developing a second generation (N1.5) that uses CMIP5 global climate models to provide an expanded and more comprehensive dataset for climate change studies. N1.5 simulations show significant improvements in capturing seasonal precipitation patterns compared to the first generation, but similar results for maximum and minimum temperatures.

Increased ratio of summer to winter deaths due to climate warming in Australia, 1968-2018

Ivan C. Hanigan et al.

Summary: The study shows that over the past 51 years, global warming has led to an increase in the ratio of summer to winter mortality in Australia, with a faster increase in years with above-average temperatures. As a result, it is concluded that as temperatures rise, mortality in the hottest and coldest months of the year will gradually converge.
