Investigating Isotopic Niche Space: Using rKIN for Stable Isotope Studies in Archaeology

Joshua R. Robinson

Summary: Archaeological applications of stable isotope data are expanding rapidly, with researchers finding that recovering data for multiple elements offers additional insight. Ecologists have formalized the concept of isotopic niche space over the last decade, providing new methods for quantifying isotopic niche overlap.

From commodity to money: The rise of silver coinage around the Ancient Mediterranean (sixth-first centuries bce)

F. Albarede et al.

Summary: By analyzing the lead and silver isotopes in ancient silver coinage, the study sheds light on why Carthage and Rome resisted monetization compared to Greece. Different smelting techniques and methods of extracting ores in different regions played a significant role in this resistance.

Metal provenance of Iron Age Hacksilber hoards in the southern Levant

Liesel Gentelli et al.

Summary: Analysis of Hacksilber has revealed that exchanges between the Levant and the Aegean world continued intermittently from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age III, with major silver sources including Lavrion (Attica), Macedonia, Thrace (northern Greece), southern Gaul (southern France), and Sardinia. Despite dominance of the Aegean world in silver supply during the Iron Age, occasional exchanges with other west Mediterranean localities indicate ongoing trade between eastern and western Mediterranean regions.

Sampling and combined Pb and Ag isotopic analysis of ancient silver coins and ores

Jean Milot et al.

Summary: The combination of Pb and Ag isotopes can help identify ancient metal sources and detect alteration in silver coins, artefacts, and ores. New procedures have been proposed for high-precision analysis of lead and silver isotopes in Ag-bearing ores and ancient silver coins, with extraction and purification protocols based on ion-exchange and chromatography. The study used MC-ICP-MS to measure the isotopic compositions of both Pb and Ag in ores and coins, revealing uncorrelated variations in Pb and Ag isotopic compositions and indicating different processes behind isotope variability.
