Genomic mechanisms of climate adaptation in polyploid bioenergy switchgrass

John T. Lovell et al.

Summary: Climate change and environmental extremes threaten food and fuel security, as well as global crop productivity. Molecular and adaptive breeding strategies can help improve crop resilience, but require in-depth knowledge of productivity and adaptation genes. The study on the genome of switchgrass revealed extensive genomic evidence of climate adaptation and accelerated climate adaptation through gene flow during postglacial colonization. These findings not only provide insights into climate adaptation patterns, but also offer tools for breeders to increase switchgrass yield for sustainable bioenergy production.

Geographical pattern of genetic diversity in Capsella bursa-pastoris (Brassicaceae)-A global perspective

Christina Wesse et al.

Summary: The global genetic variation pattern of Capsella bursa-pastoris is analyzed through allozymic and isozymic diversity, showing a moderately reduced genetic diversity in introduced populations compared to native populations. Two main clusters were identified, distributed in different climate regions, with admixture observed in regions with intermediate humidity. The global distribution patterns of genetic variation can be explained by intensive intra- and intercontinental migration, environmental filtering due to climate preadaption, and multiple independent introductions of genotypes. Endemic genotypes may result from admixture or de novo mutation, with successfully established genotypes being preadapted and matching niche conditions in colonized range parts.
