Displacing the Anthropocene: Colonisation, extinction and the unruliness of nature in Palestine

Ruba Salih et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of understanding the entanglement between nature and humans in order to comprehend settler colonialism in Palestine. It emphasizes the resistance and indomitability of indigeneity. From the perspective of colonized and displaced indigenous populations, such as Palestinian refugees, a critical engagement with the Anthropocene's focus on universal human extinction and ethical consciousness is presented. It argues that only by addressing the deeply unequal access to life entrenched in settler colonialism can a true recognition of the common, global vulnerability faced by the species emerge.

The invasiveOpuntia ficus-indicahomogenizes native plant species compositions in the highlands of Eritrea

Yohannes B. Tesfay et al.

Summary: The study found that invasion by Opuntia ficus-indica has little effect on native species diversity and richness, but does impact species composition. Due to the ongoing pressure of invasion by Opuntia ficus-indica and dry climates, further homogenization in native species diversity is expected in the highlands of Eritrea in the future.

Prickly pear for biogas production: technical-economic validation of a biogas power installation in an area with a high prevalence of cacti in Italy

Giuseppe Timpanaro et al.

Summary: Prickly pear in Italy is mainly used for human nutrition, but there is a new bio-economy involving the use of cladodes and fruit wastes for energy production. Research shows that prickly pear can be used in diets mixed with other materials. It is suggested to convert part of the domestic prickly pear production in Italy into fruit varieties suitable for human consumption.

The environmental impact of nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) production in Mexico City, Mexico through a life cycle assessment (LCA)

Guillermo Alexis Vergel-Rangel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impact of the cultivation, harvesting, and transportation processes of nopal. It found that fertilization methods in the cultivation process significantly affected global warming and ozone depletion, while transportation process resulted in acidification, mineral depletion, and water consumption.

Summary: The study found that the 'stricta' lineage of Dactylopius opuntiae could potentially be a biological control agent for Opuntia humifusa; morphology is not a clear indicator of host suitability.

Field and laboratory evaluations of different botanical insecticides for the control of Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell) on cactus pear in Morocco

Chaimae Ramdani et al.

Summary: In laboratory conditions, black soap at 60 g/l and Capsicum annuum fruit extract at 10% showed high mortality rates against D. opuntiae adult females and nymphs. In field conditions, the combination of black soap at 60 g/l and C. annuum extract at 200 g/l was the most effective in controlling the pest. Double application of black soap at 60 g/l over a 3-day spray interval significantly increased mortality rates of D. opuntiae adult females. These biodegradable products could be a safe alternative to chemical insecticides for pest control.
